Six time CBX owner

Post by Ukchap »

Good evening all, I'm back after a long hiatus. I've owned six 1982 CBX models the first being one I purchased at the age of 26 in a crate brand new in 1985. I loved that bike so much and always dreamed of owning one when they first came out in 1978 in the UK. All these years later, I just purchased a gem: 1982 with only 326 original miles and all the original bits. Runs as if it was just prepped for delivery. I plan on riding it a bit, but also taking it to several bike shows, so many pictures to follow. I'm currently having a little problem with the rear brake having no power at all. Any suggestions would be welcomed. This is my 46th motorcycle now that I've owned and doubt I will stop there!
Glad to be back.

Welcome aboard.
Polar opposites on your bike stable. A good thing, imho.
The rear brake problem is probably a master cylinder being plugged.

Welcome to the ICOA forum :text-welcomewave:

As Dave suggested in a different post where you mentioned this problem, the culprit is very likely the rear master cylinder. You said the fluid was replaced and brakes were bled - I think that may not have been done properly. The rear master is sometimes a little finicky to get to work after fluid has been drained. And just to make sure, take it out, take it apart and check that the seals on the piston have been installed properly.

After having a good friend and long time motorcycle tech inspect it, the rear was so badly corroded that the piston was virtually attached to the cylinder. After several acid baths it appears to have freed up. More to follow with pictures. I'm realizing that not having many miles also meant a lot of wear on several components by age deterioration!

There is a fluid return orifice in the small reservoir that connects up to the larger. For some reason that is prone to plugging up. While its apart you'd be wise to verify that both of those are clear.

Well finally found time to write. Master cylinder now working fine after several acid baths and a complete rebuild. All good now. Front forks have developed a leak and not holding air in the fronts. Anyone know of a good shop to have fronts redone?

If you don't mind posting them to Tucson, I will rebuild them to your spec. Simple refresh to include new seals and orings and oil and a thorough cleaning, or the full RaceTech treatment: new springs, spacers, cartridge emulators, oil, yadda. $100 labor plus parts plus shipping.
