1980 Honda CBX 1000 super sport

Post by Ryno »

Hi there guys.

I am new to the forum and a first time 6 cyl owner. I can remember long time ago when my father used to work on his friends bike and that was love at first sight. I recently bought very scarce 1980 Honda super sport. As far as my knowledge goes the difference on them was the longer handle bars and the small boot and the rims.

I am actually looking for the complete headlight with brackets and original indicators, reason for this are that I bought the bike with an aftermarket fairing on and this is a "Model A" and not the B model.

I stay in the beautiful Cape Town South Africa, so if anybody can help me with these items, I would appreciated it so much. So i can bring this beauty to its original self. I have the original owners manual and the bike still has its original tool kit in it, and original milage on 21889 km on the clock.

Any help would be helpful and thank you.

Hello Ryno and welcome to the ICOA forum.
The 1980 CBX is indeed somewhat rare outside the U.S. It looks like you have a U.S. or Canadian spec model with the higher handlebars. You can identify this by the VIN plate. If it is a large plate on the steering neck, which says 1980 Model, it is a Canadian or U.S. market bike. If it has a smaller VIN plate on the side of the frame under the right side of the tank, it would be a "rest of the world" issue.
As you quite rightly say, the difference to the 1979 model were the wheels and the small compartment in the tail - among a few other things.
Headlights especially and brackets to some extend, have become rare after a few parts dealers have cornered the market and hoard them in order to sell them for exorbitant prices.
Good luck in your search!

Hi EMS

Thanx for the reply. Yes this one has the big 1980 vin plate on the neck of the bike. Tell me is there a difference in headlights and brackets from the other models, cause i want to keep it original as possible.

Welcome to the site, Ryno.
The headlight bucket and ears from a '79 or '80 will work for your bike.
There are a couple other SA members here, hopefully they chime in with some semi-local knowledge.

Hello, and welcome! Is your '80 a Japanese bike or Marysville, USA-built bike? It will state that on the VIN plate. The headlight bucket is unique to the CBX hence the high prices asked for them. If you are handy, you might score a slightly damaged one and repair it for less money. The '80 buckets were their own part number and I think, made of different material, since they seem more robust after 30 years than the prone-to-cracking '79 part numbers. But you'll never find an '80 part number.

US and maybe other market's 750F-900F headlight buckets will work fine and you really can't tell the difference. They mount to the wire frame exactly the same. The headlight frames for the CBX are readily available for not too much money. Stock turn signals are another matter - hope you have them!

It is sort of rare in South Africa. U.S. built models were not sold outside the U.S. and Canada. What is the build date in the upper right corner of the VIN plate and what is the VIN number??

Thanks!
Did the previous owner give you any history how the bike made it to SA?

The VIN number just confirms the bike was US-built (now, a Malaysian-built CBX WOULD indeed be rare!). Not much else can be gleaned other than that. Is it red or black? Most US-built bikes seem to have been black, although a red one shows up from time-to-time.

Hi Dave, this is the red one and i am fascinated by the different models that u get in the 4x years that they are built.I think they call them Model A if i am not mistaken.

Yes, we got the lion's share of all years of CBXs here. But most other markets got the really good ones, having the sports kits installed as standard for all years. Sport-kitted is the way these were meant to be, but American Honda convinced Honda to produce the high-bar variety for the US market, and offer the sport kit as an option. I don't think any '80s had the sport kit from the factory, however the correct 469 sport kit was available for it as well.
