Newbie from Québec, Canada

Post by not_bob_3 »

Hi! I just want to introduce myself quickly. Francis, mechanical engineering technologist working in the MCAD industry from the north shore of Montréal, Québec. I just acquired a '79 CBX in semi good shape (café racer project that got out of hands of the previous owner). The bike has lots of work to do to get to decent, and even more to reflect the image I got in my head. I was looking for a platform to build a café racer too, was steering towards a CB400 or 450 when I saw that beast in the local ads... I went all "shut up and take my money" and here I am. The seller looked at me weirdly when I said the bike and I were exactly the same age...but everyone knows the best things were made in 1979 ;-)

The bike is slightly modified (no air box, replaced with 6 independant air filters, Dyna ingnition, front blinkers, painted engine, commands and calipers) but I do have all the original parts plus a DG 6-1 exhaust and the most important, an original Honda mechanic book.

I'll be documenting my journey into my first rebuild project for your pleasure but mostly as an aid to my memory. I'm steering towards a ridable retro-mod with non-permanent mods, including custom mono seat, bubble and café handle bars. I'm thinking of swapping a CBR front end that the seller still has (also has GSXR rear end with all the custom machined stuff still in its box). Selling my old house in 2 weeks from now should make me decide. I really dig the twin shocks look but as a 250lbs geared up rider and my tendency to twist the right wrist, I'm kinda scared of that CT70-looking fork. I'm also questioning the riding position with café handlebars, I haven't found posts on relocating the pegs, if anyone did it, let me know.

I've been riding since I'm 10 all of these babies. I'm not that old, I was just poor haha!
'72 Honda CT70 aka The Undestructible (dead)
'73 Suzuki RV125 aka The Roover (dead)
'85 Honda XL 350 aka crank me until you're sore (dead)
'91 Suzuki Katana 750 (dead)
'08 Suzuki DRZ 400 S (sold to a guy who brought it to Baja and Dakota, pretty cool pics)
'08 Suzuki DRZ 400-SM aka The Butt Hurter (sold, but man was this a fun bike!)
'08 Kawasaki KLR 650 aka The Tank (still in garage, will look into the CBX project advancement, meanwhile I need my dose of riding)

Looking forward to share and learn.

Francis! Welcome!

Great intro, and you would indeed be wise to chronicle your adventures here as you put your bike together. Several folks have done similar projects in recent years, (including me - see the link in my sig) and there is nothing we all enjoy more than reading along and helping get one of these great bikes back in to good running order and back on the road. If you post your adventures, including pictures, and ask for help, it will come out of the woodwork.

Let's dig in!

Francis, don't be afraid of that spindle set of forks. I'm on the wrong side of 300#, and they do just fine until I push it really hard. The CBX will teach you to be smooth with your inputs.

Either garage is too small or we have too many bikes. Or Momma's car needs to go outside.

Thanks Rick! Are you using progressive springs and fork brace or all natural?

Hey Steve, thanks for putting the pressure on me ;-) ! I read in diagonal this building thread and that's super impressive. Being my first project ever, I don't think I'll go full crazy on the job as Mikey did. I can't be the first to say this who finally ends up with a space rocket in the backyard. Mix a single guy who just sold his old house (with profit) with this kind of project, who knows where it'll be in 3 years from now. As Mikey says a lot, officers are quite anal in our Belle Province and we have to be careful not to bring any additional attention. Hopefully, I live quite away from Montreal and we don't have lots of police presence. I ran my DRZ-SM with full FMF exhaust system for numerous years and I never got into trouble. Keeping my fingers crossed that I can run this DG 6-1 for more than a day.

Vacations just started for me, I'll be firing up this project in the next 2 weeks. First steps : browse through the box of goodies that came with the bike, battery, tires, gas and oil change, open up valve cover for rough check and see if the engine / transmission are functionnal...

Francis, i just wanted to direct you to a talented, good guy that lives near you.
I am frequently in awe of the knowledge and skills present on this site.
Ontario is heading in the same direction with local cities/townships enforcing noise by-laws. My PipeMasters will need the quiet baffles.

Francis,

The stock front end, with Progressive springs, can work pretty well. I use 10w fluid, 6 1/2 inches from the top with fork collapsed and springs removed.

All the best, and you came to the right place. So many, helpful, patient, and knowledgeable folks here just waiting to help.
