Different alternator ?

Post by ray bear »

Hi all,& they say if it aint broke dont fix it well my daily ride a 78 CBX Z has always had a low charge rate and I decided after many trouble free miles to do something about it before it stopped working & picked up a NOS rotor 31110-422-005 and a remanufactured stator from Ricks Motorsport 31120-422-005 and a new rectifier but when I pulled my old alternator off it was a much smaller unit in fact my old rotor is 82mm dia and the new one is 102mm .
On speaking to two people in the so called know they said all cbx's had the same alternator but on further investigation the Honda parts manual does show other numbers -rotor 31110-422-611 and stator 31120-422-611, are these numbers the smaller unit.
Can my bike be modified to take the bigger unit and if possible would I be better off looking for the different housings brush holder etc or staying with my smaller unit .. hope some one can shed some light on this matter.. Thanks for all replies Bill

You have the Euro-spec alternator - yes there were two different ones made. The larger ones were much more common and you should find parts for them quite easily. The large one bolts right on.

Bill:

Where are you located. Is your bike U.S. or Euro spec? Is your headlight on, when you switch on the ignition?

If it is legal in OZ to run without headlight on, your small alternator should be fine. The guys in Europe never had a problem with too small of an output. The large alternator was only featured on bikes for the U.S. because of the "headlight on" requirement
