Greetings from London

Post by Scudrunner »

Have just become a surprise CBX owner! - believe it or not my wife bought me a 1980 Z model for my birthday! (apparently I've been "going on" about them for years :D ).

Anyway lots to learn - bike is not standard but appears to have "in period" mods; non-standard "mag" wheels, Marshall six into one exhaust, aftermarket swing arm(?) and twin pot front brake calipers. I've only been for a quick blast, because the tyres are seriously old (last taxed in 2005) and I want to swap them for some sticky modern covers before venturing out into the cold UK winter, but boy does that exhaust howl!.

I'll try and get some photo's loaded up so the wise can advise on the identity of the mods. Not sure what direction I'm going to go in - ride her for a while as-is first?

Scud - your wife kicks ass. Good choice.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations! Now post pictures of the bike or it didn't happen.

Welcome to the site, Scud.
Sounds like you have a great wife. Has she got a sister?
I had a Marshall that had a nice rumble.

OK, here are some pictures - perhaps someone might recognise the bike? Can anyone advise/confirm the identity of some of the mods? three spoke mag wheels, twin pot front brake calipers, Matmechex(?) swing arm? Marshall exhaust. Oh and er yes my wife does have an (unmarried) sister! Sorry the photos are in the garage - it's snowing in southern Englands at the moment.

Nice looking bike.
Tough to tell on the swingarm without another pic but the chain adjusters look like Metmachex. The calipers look like stock Pro-link items.
The rims might be Dy-Mags. That would be nice.

Yes, nice bike... Certainly the color of your front calipers is not original -- but that you know anyway. :-) I am not quite sure when double-piston brakes were introduced, perhaps it was with the 80 model, perhaps it was only later. My 79 CB1 has front single-piston breakes -- this is original, I know -- and I am just upgrading to double-piston brakes because I find this safer.

Certainly someone can tell for sure with which model year double-piston brakes were introduced.

Cheers, Bernd

The calipers are probably CB900F or similar. The Prolink calipers would not fit properly with the original brake rotor as they are spaced for the thicker, ventilated disc. Unless you have really thick brake pads, I think somebody used F calipers.
As far as the wheels are concerned, I vote against Dymags. These may look similar, but still not quite the same.

The Dy-Mag Classic H rims were close but it looks like they are CMA Alloy bike wheels.
Maybe still in business? http://www.companies-uk.co.uk/cma-wheel ... d-01768002

We are close, I am in Crawley so 20 minutes away! When you are ready you are more than welcome to ride over to me for some advice and a cuppa. I run my own business in Copthorne, it's not uncommon for local CBXers to visit me at work during the working day. Are you a member of the CBX Riders Club?

Yes that is close! I'll investigate joining CBX riders club. I work up in London during the week, so its weekend biking only for me. Look forward to meeting up.

Hi Scudrunner
Another cbx in the south of england-great, I recently purchased mine from the states and keep in touch with some great people from int cbx club. you must join the u/k club, the two clubs work together and bring the following together. You have made a good start in contacting Goss, he helped me out and I will meet him in the warmer weather. I will not ride in the winter, the salt ect is not rider friendly to my cbx or my cb750s, also good to go to classic bike show at shepton maller and meet some of the guys on the 16th feb, enjoy
regards neal
