Aloha From Kauai

Post by kauai1800 »

Aloha Everyone!

Well I dove into the deep end yesterday buying a semi-basket case "school bike" CBX with only 4 miles (!) on the clock. I guess these bikes are still out there!
It's a 1982 and while the frame of the bike has sat outside and gotten a bit beat up, the entire top of the motor is still in a box. Paint looks near mint. Lots of what appears to be NOS bodywork and tons of other new bits in this treasure chest.
I'm still in the process of getting all the parts and the bike itself moved to my house, sorted and inspected. The bottom end of the motor sat out in the open and it was buried so far in the back of the shed I couldn't see the crank...it's my main worry.
The top end looks unused though :handgestures-fingerscrossed: .
Got both sets of original pipes too (a tad rusty, but no holes or anything..), full service manuals, parts list and tons of NOS gaskets, cables, etc.

I'm going to get everything looked over and will want some help and forum wisdom deciding what to do with the bike: fully restore it (not so likely), partially restore it and have fun with it, or part it out.

I'm no mechanical genius, but I'm not a complete noob to the world of working on bikes. Obviously having my first major rebuild be a 6-carb CBX might be a bit challenging, but I think I'm up to it.
More info coming soon...

Congrats to your aquisition and welcome to the ICOA forum.
Although I do disagree with the assessment of the 82 being a schoolbike. While some experts claim there were 82 CBXes donated to vocational schools also and that they even bought some, it is not quite in line with the history of the CBX schoolbikes.
The 1981 models did not sell very well (in the U.S.). And as the 82s were coming out, Honda decided to donate inventory that had not made it to dealers to vocational schools. They received a tax credit for that and the stipulation was that these bikes would never be operated on the roads in the U.S. There were no titles issued. There is no record that the same thing happened towards the end of the 1982 run. Especially as there were less 1982s produced than 1981s as a result of Honda's bad experience.

Well it's a cool find, whatever it's history. Welcome!

I will let you know that there is nothing this collective likes any more than helping put a CBX back on the road, so whatever your goals for originality, if you go that route you'll get all the help you could ever ask for, particularly if you master the process of taking decent pics and posting them. There are tutorials here on the site about a few ways of doing that. Worth a thousand words and all that.

Whatever you decide, welcome. If you decide to put it on the road, I'll help too.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

And EMS thanks for the background info. I actually mis-spoke as the bike is a 1981 model, which fits with what you said.
When you look at the photos I'm sure you guys will be able to tell me exactly what I've got.
It's a 1981 Super Sport Pro-Link I think.

Today I began looking in the box and here's some of the things I found - this is just the main parts - there are dozens of new rubber pieces, piston rings, head gasket on and on.....as you look at these photo please comment if you see anything strange or stuff I should know.

Full shop manual in mint condition and xeroxed (remember that??) parts list plus couple NOS gaskets.

5453

NOS side panels still in their foam pouches
5446
5449

shiny carbs..
5451

cam side looks unused..only the bolts have rusted in the salt air..like everything does here.
5447

I didn't even wipe this down yet. No sign a gasket has been installed and new gaskets were in the box.
5448

exhaust side:
5450

inside the head looks pretty good:
5452

Here's the instrument cluster...rusted bezel but that odometer looks pretty cool.. :-) Love the break in sticker still attached...
5445

And here's the bike as it sits. I plan to pick it up and bring it home in a couple days...also the bottom end is still in the shed at the sellers house.
5444
The wheels are nearly flawless. The tires are originals with no wear (of course I won't ride on them). There's a small dent in the top of the gas tank that probably can be pushed out- but otherwise it looks really good. Fairing and windscreen look mint.
I have all the hardware from the back of the bike but I don't plan to use any of it..I'd ride it with the fairing but without the saddlebags.

OK so that should give you guys an idea of what I bought...for all of... um....$400...

Wow. Great project. The bike looks great!

I'm gonna cast my vote for stripping it naked (no front fairing). Search around here for the term "Naked Prolink" and you'll find several builds. They are awesome, probably the best riding of all the CBX variants as they have much stouter swingarms and monoshocks and stouter forks.

This will be fun!

Only issue is if it was a school bike is a title. But you got one hell of a deal for parts only. :twocents-02cents:

Welcome aboard.
Opening boxes of parts when you are not quite sure of the contents sounds like fun.

welcome

i was in the same boat you are now a year and a half ago with my own '81. as the guys say here "everyone is willing to help". ask lots of questions because one thing i was told that i have never forgotten was "these things get expensive if you head off in the wrong direction to many times". one bit of advise i would give you is photo document EVERYTHING, i can't tell you how many times i went back to my pictures of stripping down the bike because by the time you go back to put it together you WILL have forgotten where stuff goes or how it fits. good luck with it. looking forward to watching your progress.
