New '79 owner with a few questions.
Hello All, I have just received my 1979 CBX 1000 that I imported from the USA - yippeee! The kind gentleman that sold it to me bought it new in California in 1979 and rode it home to South Carolina, apparently, and that's where this beauty came from.
First, I cannot find an engine number anywhere. The Vin is CB12000667 and look as hard as I can it is nowhere to be seen? Second, the sidestand has a tendency to want to fold back up after you swing it out, sometimes before you can safely get the bike's weight on it. Is this normal? I have already re-bushed the gear lever linkage to eliminate slop and its much more precise now. Great site and lots of info to absorb!!!!
Picked it up from the container yard and have a few small things to do before I can get it road registered here in Western Australia.
A couple of questions which, to me are odd but you guys must know the answers(!).....First, I cannot find an engine number anywhere. Welcome and congrats. My black '80 is headed your way also (New Zealand). The engine number is on top of the engine right behind the clutch cover and right under the airbox. You'll need a good light to see it. You sidestand is not stock CBX. That's your problem. You'll need to find a CBX one. Hope you enjoy your new bike and don't be shy about asking questions.

There was a guy from New Zealand who was interested in the CBX but I made a decision to buy quicker than him (he is a Kiwi after all....!) so maybe that's the same guy?
The chain is at it's maximum stretch so I will get a new chain (530 seems to be the best recommended) and sprockets and remove the swingarm to inspect / replace the bushes at the same time. It's done just over 19000 miles - is that what you would expect from a chain? The sprockets do not look worn, nore the chain really but it is loose on the rear sprocket and you can get hold of it between two fingers and slide it left and right over the sprocket. If I took the chain off, with the swingarm removal, is there a measurement that will tell me if the chain is too worn? Thanks again.
Yes, turned it up on the lathe here at, sshhh.....work (!). Did'nt think of trying to source one and then.....steve murdoch icoa #5322 wrote:It looks like you have a beauty there, bug.

....seems to have the instant answer! Thanks all of you for the comments.
I have just recently had two 650 Nighthawks pass through my hands (one a restoration / rebuild) and I can say that I love working on the CBX alot more

Job this morning is to fix a reluctant speedo - lots of good info on this site

Andy:
20,000 miles is about the limit for a chain on these with reasonable care. 530 is the way to go. Checking/replacing swingarm bushings and cleaning up that whole area is a good idea. Just make sure you get the right gearing (18 and 42 tooth sprockets) for the 530 chain. 102 link chain I think is correct. Did you find the engine number?

Re: New '79 owner with a few questions.
Hello Dave,
Thanks - found the engine number! As you said, it's not easy to find but it is there. Ha ha! The previous owner had it for over 30 years and never knew it was there....!
Today I took the speedo completely apart and cleaned it and refitted it and....all is well! Works a treat. I will post lots of photos tomorrow, showing the internal workings of the speedo and how I did it. It was the sticky fluid on the "cup" that was slowing things down so much. It all took about 2 hours but well within everyones ability I am certain!!!!
Regards, Andy

What did you use to replace the dampening fluid in the cup? There is a thread here where a guy got a good replacement at a hobby shop, it's a silicone oil used in RC car transmissions.vwbug7777 wrote:Hello Dave,
