Right Hand Switch Assembly

Post by CopperCollar »

As I approach the completion of the Travesty some small issues/details have cropped up. One of these were the switches, left and right handlebar switches.

While they both looked good they in fact were shite. Both had cracks and stripped screw threads and would not stay secure on the handlebars. I went through the usual ebay crap and crap is what was out there for muy deniro. Sun faded and baked switches that neary crumbled in my hands. Innards were salvaged for springs and bearings but the rest was crap.

So I searched for a switch that was close to the stock CBX switch. I came up with one that Honda still stocks.

It is very close sans red connector, the H,P and dot above the starter button and the black wire. The stock CBX switch has two black wires to one spade. This replacement only has one wire.
The stock connector:

So I bought a switch and removed the red connector, cut off the male spades and then attached the B9 male spades to it and assembled it all into the CBX white 9P connector.
I found the B9 male spades at Z1 enterprises, http://www.z1enterprises.com/Terminal-P ... -1681.aspx

I used a proper crimping tool found locally"

End result:

I then assembled these spades into the proper slots of the 9P connector, I marked the connector and took pictures with my cell phone to assure correct assembly, this is the old switch wiring:

End result on the Travesty:

Some may ask how to get the male spades out of the 9P connector, I used a small flat blade eyeglass screw driver to depress the tang and pull the spade out:

I haven't come up with a solution for the left handlebar switch yet.

I might add that the 35130-463-505 is a superior switch in that it has a metal handlebar locator pin and the screw threads are brass inserts and not just threaded plastic.

This switch would be noticed by an experienced CBX'r but if one was to use an xacto knife to shave off the H,P, and dot then touch up the area with SEMs paint I think even an experienced CBX'r would have a hard time identifying the switch without taking it off the bike.

Nice job! Actually, the later CBX switches did have metal locating pins. No one will ever know.

hey mike

i am curious. i want to find a new right hand switch for my '81. mine HAS the red connector, looks like this one is the same? any thoughts on if this would fit the pro-links out of the box? any idea how long the wire is on it? the one on my bike seems to be too short for some reason?????

thanks a lot!

I haven't seen the later CBX connector but I would expect the 9p connector to work.

Dave will read this and chime in I hope.

The switch is for a Goldwing (original for 80/81 GL1100) The red connector will plug into the Prolink harness. The markings on the housing are for some markets where the right side carries an additional light switch in the housing H=high, P=park, o=off.
