New Member in MA
Hello to all. I'm a new member living on the Outer Cape Cod area of MA. I just purchased a nicely restored 82 CBX. Its a little cold out there but I've ridden it several times and it has exceeded my already high expectatations. I was really surprised at the light handling for the size and weight. Most of my motorcycles are air cooled singles and twins so this will be a very different experience. Great site. Ben Zehnder, Wellfleet, MA

Hi ya, Ben.
Singles, twins to a six...no need for any of those stop-gap fours!
There are a couple guys in your area that you might bump into.
Like every website, looking forward to pics of any of your bikes.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I do have a couple of 400F's so it looks like a Yamaha or Triumph is needed for the three. A five might be difficult.

Here is a link to my friend Allen's first five cylinder H1. He has since built many of them.
Best,
Phil

...not that Allen Millyard's creations are affordable to the common man. If they would be, I would probably own one...and one of his Z1 8s and a KZ(1300) twelve.....

Re: New Member in MA
Allen offered me his last H1 5 cylinder build last year at what I considered to be a very reasonable price.
Considerably less than my Martin and less than some CBX's I have seen in the last few years.
Perhaps he was just being very nice to me. I think the Viper would cost more
My preference would be for one of his 1000cc H2 four cylinder Kawasaki's.

I knew there were 5 cylinder motorcycles out there somewhere. I'll have to check the cover shot for the Art of the Motorcycle catalogue (shifting the dog and getting off the couch) - Yup 1922 Megola with the 5 cylinder engine in the front wheel. Must have had a teriffic gyroscopic stability as long as you didn't turn. I rode my XS11 from Cape Cod to NYC just to see that show. They had dedicated mc parking in front of the Guggenheim for the show. I read the book cover to cover about once a year. I still can't get over their picking the Bennelli Sei over the CBX.
The Kawi looks like an amazing build, but maybe a little terrifying on the pipe. How is it to ride? How many are out there?
I'm a little slow getting pictures up. I need to re-shoot with lower file sizes.
Changed the oil in the CBX today and noted that there is no spring in between the oil filter cover and filter, but a spring is shown in the work manual? Is this ok? The previous owner had very clean oil in the bike but the drain plug crush washer was absolutely mushroomed around the plug. I used a torque wrench to the book value of 23fp on the reinstall with a new washer. Oil pan threads seemed fine.
Christmas etc regards to all.

Hi,
No, it is not OK to run without the spring. You are effectively running with no oil filter.
I really do not know how many of the fives Allen has built but I think I may have heard around thirty. Don't quote on this one.
Very Best,
Phil

Don't forget the washer that goes along with the spring. Thousands still get thrown away with each oil change on the CBX (they stick to the filter) and other old Hondas with the same filter set-up.

Welcome to the joys of owning and riding a CBX. I visit the Cape a few times during the year in the Spring and Fall. My wife and I love the Town of Wellfleet, the Harbor, history, winery and even the flee market. Maybe we will see you in2012.
