Oil slime

Post by ajs350 »

I've just bought a 79 and have begun to work through the various maintenance items. Upon removing the valve cover I found everything covered in this black oil slime. I'm wondering if the entire inside of the engine is coated this way and whether I need to worry about cleaning it out or just keep to regular oil changes?

Are you going to take the head off?
If not, I would take the cams out and clean them including the oil orifices in the caps and take the oil pan off to clean the sump and the oil pump. Replace the screen. You should be fine. I would change the oil after running the bike for 500 miles.

The head looks fine so I was going to leave it on. I'll follow your advice on the cams and oil screen.
Thanks for the advice.
