Tightening front wheel

When tightening the front wheel the manual says to lightly tighten the front axle holder nuts first. Then tighten the right front nut to 13-18ft lbs and then the right rear. Next do the left side, front nut first and then the rear.
When I do this the axle holders mate flush with the forks at the front but have a gap of about 1mm between the axle cap and fork at the rear.
Is this correct or should I torque so that the gap is even either side?

Also the manual says to check the gap with a 0.7mm feeler gauge betwwn the left brake caliper and rotor. My gap is 1.18mm. Again is this OK?
Thanks.

Ross:
You are doing it correctly. There will be a gap in the back. The left fork leg will move in and out on the axle to get the exact caliper holder clearance you desire. Keep in mind that if you tweak it a lot from it's normal resting point, it may bind the forks slightly. I'd tighten up the clearance a little bit and let it at that.
