Is 422 muffler repair possible?

Hey all,

New to the list and new to CBXs. Not new to old Hondas and enthusiast lists though. I just picked my 79 up from the original owner. Never restored and in surprisingly good shape. A bunch of really small cosmetic things that need attention but lots of time to fix that stuff. I'm sure I'll have loads of questions but here is my first.

Is there anyone or any service you guys know of that can repair original mufflers that are starting to blister from internal rust? It would seem the pipes could be cut apart, patched, polished and replated. No easily of course. But the rest of the stock pipes are near perfect. The head pipes are perfect. The rear outlet is perfect. Seems a shame to ditch the stock 422 pipes given the cost of alternatives. Pics attached below.

Hey Grazi, welcome to the site.

WOW did you score. That bike looks immaculate! Pity about the pipes. You might already know that the Dutch club commissioned the recreation of the Sankei 422 exhaust system, and so it seem like that might be an option: Buy a set for $1,200 or so and use it's mufflers, recoup what you can by selling the remaining hardware and headers. Stock mufflers in comparable shape to the rest of your bike are rare and expensive, and of the three variations of exhaust systems, yours happens to be the one that was reproduced, your good luck.

My compliments as well on the CBX's stablemates. That is an outstanding trio of Honda superbike history right there. First rate.

Thanks for the response and kind words. I wasn't sure if the "repro" systems like that were actually exact duplicates and a "parts swap" like just the mufflers would work. Do the pipes you reference have all the original Honda markings? Any threads or links you can direct me to?

Man that's a crying shame that someone let those pipes self destruct like that. I'd LOVE to have those headers on my OEM pipes.

I'm believing that the 750 is a '73?? My highschool buddy got its' twin brother in '73 when we graduated. :)

By comparison, I had a mighty '70 Suzuki F50 Cutlass (stepthrough). Still have it; it's on an elevated display in our showroom. :)

Yes you are correct. The CB750 is a '73. The VF is an '85. I also have an '82 CB900F I bought new not pictured.

The Sankei reproduced exhaust system comes from SixCenter Motoren, in the Netherlands. http://www.sixcenter.nl/nieuws/

In the US you can get them from Northeast Vintage Cycle http://www.hondanuts.com/home.html

However, you won't see them on their web page. They sell them on ebay, or you can call them at (716) 592-6382. I'm pretty sure that if you call them you will get a better deal than ebay.

They may be waiting on the next production run from Japan.

I have a set, and to me they look exactly like the original exhaust system for a '79, but I have not installed them yet, so I cannot say for certain that they are perfect. They are marked HM422ED, which I believe is a European exhaust system, but I don't know what differences there were between European and US models. Probably nothing noteworthy. For a '79, I think this may be as close to an OEM exhaust system as you will ever find. After all, they are made by the same company that made the originals for Honda.
