replacement alternator

Post by banjobill »

Hi all,
I know the std alternator is ok ish, but I also found out that a kawasaki 600 alternator is just about a direct replacement for the cbx with the reg/rectifier unit built in. However it is the exact model of 600 is what I'm after.

Any advice welcome.

cheers.

Alternators

Post by Supersix »

Hi,
The Alternators are from varius Kawa modells, like ZXR 750 or GPZ 900-1100.

Alternators fromTriumph 3 Zylinders works also good.
Pic shows the ZXR 750 Alt,my personell favorit.

Doesn't any of these require machined adapters to be made up for use on the CBX?
What exact models are usable?Model make and years?
Who makes adapters?

Alternator

Post by EMS »

:!: Of course, they require an adapter. As you can see in the picture. Machining a part like this out of a chunk of aluminum is no small feat. In addition you need to fabricate a new drive coupling. I had a complete assembly exactly like the one shown in the pic for sale and offered it on the old web-site. ONE (1) person was interested. :!: After I let it sit for a while, I put it on ebay and another ICOA member bought it for $417.00 These things have two advantages: no wearing brushes and no regulator necessary. The reg is included in the ZX7R alternator and the stock regulator can be circumnavigated by connecting directly to the black and red/white wire of the regulator plug. I encourage you to price the custom machining of an adapter incl. material, fabricating of a coupling and a decent used alternator. See whether you can get it done for less than $400.00. You may be :o

It was a rhetorical question.I know all about the after market Alternators for the CBX.The questions needing actual answers are make model year of alternators that can be used and where to get the adapters.
You sold yours for $417 and a guy just sold one for $197 on Ebay.He wouldn't accept anything but Paypal as payment.I offered a PMO.So he lost money.
I'm frugal so I would rather find out where to buy the adapters and purchase the alternator on my own.
I can purchase the German one from Stephan (I think its him) for $375.

------Sure is a nice alternator,I'm stuck with stock due to the location of my primary exhaust pipe to the turbine section of my turbocharger on my '79.My '80 carbureted model could benefit though..........
Take care & ride safe,

Ripper: I think the thing sold on ebay for $197.00 was a Dyna igniton unit, not an alternator..

alt & ignition

Post by Jeff Bennetts »

Whoever got that dyna ign for 197.00 got a good deal,I followed that action for a few days just to see the bidding,I already have one but I almost bid on it anyway since they don't sell them anymore.

Hey EMS,you didn't answer the e-mail I sent you asking about your alt,I saw it on E-bay and had some questions for you, looks like your to busy on the new CBX line. I see by your e-bay location you live just north of me in Cleveburg maybe I'll see you locally sometime.

Jeff:

sorry for dropping the ball. I was out of town for a while and need to catch up. After the alternator sold, I thought I had addressed everything. If you want to speed the process up, send me the q again!
