SIDE COVERS
When I replaced the damaged side covers on my 80 CBX I sanded and re-painted them satin black like my 79. I looked at the pictures I have collected and the sales brochure to see if they are supposed to be glossy or satin and half of my pictures and the sales brochure look satin so I went with that. Did Honda install satin and then switch to glossy later in the 80 model year. I need an 80 owners manual if anyone has one for sale.

Always subject of debate. One theory was that all black bikes had glossy sidecovers and when Marysville started assembly, only glossy sidecovers were used. There is still an opinion that Marysville only built black bikes. But some members have red Marysville 80s and they know that the bike came like this to the dealer.
And I know of one red Marysville bike with satin sidecovers.

I had a feeling the response might go like that. I am a member of the forum that covers the 67-69 SS/CL125A's and there were several mid year changes that has concours restorers freaking out.

Re: SIDE COVERS
Being a Silver '79, mine would have had satin black covers, correct?? If so, were they unfinished satin ABS or were they painted? Mine have been painted silver, and look fine, but I like the black look better.

Re: SIDE COVERS
The "matte" or "satin" sidecovers were finished but not painted with a black color. I think they had some sort of clear coating over the plastic.
The issue wether Marysville built only black or black and red bikes will soon be put to rest. The AMA Hall Of Fame museum has a Honda Marysville special exhibition and they show a black CBX. I have a date with a Honda employee down there in October , who was among the first workers in September of 1979, and we will talk about this for an upcoming CBXPress article.

Re: SIDE COVERS
Hi, I am about to paint a pair of new side covers for my 79. The only reference I found was this post but I was wondering if someone has used any spray can paint that matches original color. I am inclined towards this http://www.spraymax.com/en-us/products/ ... rod-black/
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: SIDE COVERS
If you are painting '79 covers, yes, satin black is the finish you want. Can't speak to that exact brand though.

Re: SIDE COVERS
Thanks. I am concerned that the one I am looking at is more like the black used for the engines on those days.
