What should I pay for this 1979 CBX ? Bike was last ridden and stored 12 years ago. Original owner, has all service documents, paperwork, manuals and a clean title. 27k miles, Full Kerker system, also included is the original exhaust system. Tank and carbs were drained of gas before storing, but there is oil in the crank/sump. Battery was also removed. Owner assures me that he babied the bike and it has never been down. He wants to see it restored and ridden, which I plan to do. So how much should I pay for this bike, based on those that are 'in the know' ! As far as an introduction goes I am a CHP / CMSP Instructor. Based in Los Angeles. Married 31 years, 4 kids, 43 years of riding, had about that many bikes as well. over 600k miles on 2 wheels. My daily ride is my department Honda ST1300P . Thanx in advance for any advice.

Hi James - welcome to here! I and I'm sure several others here have followed/commented on your Facebook post. I'm still at $6500-$7500 for this bike. I looks indeed cosmetically as though it will clean up nicely (hard to tell for sure though). The biggest thing that you have to determine is whether you are able/can do most of the recommissioning. It will need totally gone through from front to back. Fork rebuild, new stem bearings for sure, brakes, swingarm bushings, tires, chain and sprockets (go to a 530), battery, tires. I'd be very confident, if the owner is being up front, that the engine is fine, but certainly needing the valves checked, camchains adjusted, advancer and timing checked. New valve cover seals, other miscellaneous gaskets and seals. You may also find the speedo and/or tach needles are slow to respond. They will need sent out for a reconditioning.

Then there's the carbs. They will need a total rebuild and there's not even a question about that. Do not attempt to run the bike without first doing that or having it done. If you are going to farm out anything, it would be the carbs. They have to be right or you will never be happy with the bike. You'll need new intake rubbers as well.

I know you don't even have the bike yet, but the above are all things you need to consider when deciding what to offer.

See if the serial number is particularly low, perhaps a 3-digit one. Lots of early bikes were sold in CA, the early ones are desired by some, although there are no real differences between those and later bikes.

I'd be very happy to see you get this bike for a decent price, just wanted you to be armed with as much info as possible.
