Thanks for letting me join!

I just picked the bike up yesterday after 25 years of slumber buried under blankets in the garage in Atlanta. The bike has 20,000 mi and is very clean overall.

It was stored with fuel in the tank but the carburetors were empty. Big plus! I'll do electrolysis on the tank to remove the surface rust and then coat it with Caswell epoxy tank liner. I hope and pray that the carbs will work as is.

The brakes will need to be completely gone through though they're not bad. Believe it or not the brake fluid is still in liquid form.

I've been puzzling over how to get the seat off this thing. I took the two acorn nuts off of the saddlebag front mounting bolts and I took the two Phillips head screws out of the back corners of the seat that are underneath above the fender. The silly thing still won't budge. Any advice would be appreciated before I pull the remainder of my thinning hair out lol!

You need the shop manual ASAP, find that here:

That will describe a lot of things that you need to know, including getting that PITA seat off (I also have an '82).

The carbs 100% definitely need to come off and be rebuilt. I have done many sets with Dave McMunn, aka daves79x. There are other well-respected guys in the community for that too.

Last, any question is a good question, and nobody here is likely to try and make you feel dumb, but you'll get a lot further a lot faster if you search the site for answers first and then start your questions from there.

Also this backrest and rear rack came with it. The guy couldn't remember if it was from this bike and I can't quite see how it would fit. Does it look like something that would have been an accessory on the CBX?

I do not think that backrest will fit a CBX, it looks like it might fit one of the DOHC 750-1000 Customs. But that's a guess.

Welcome! Nice find you have there. All of what Nils said! Don't turn a wrench until you get a shop manual and study what it is you are trying to do. Just about anything you need to know is here in the archives, but Nils' Facebook page is the definitive treatise on rehabbing a CBX. Be thorough and do not take shortcuts and you will be rewarded.

Finally got the seat off! It wasn't clear to me from the manual or from any postings that I found that the rear cowl stays attached to the seat when it is removed. You have to remove the rear handrail and it's mounting studs. Then everything comes off smoothly when slid to the rear.

They’re a great looking bike and a great touring mount. My last one had 106,000 on it thru 11 states. I hope to get another this coming Sunday myself. It has less than 34,000 on it.
