Hello, I acquired a 1980 CBX a few years ago. I am in the process of restoring the bike and have a few questions.
1. Are the side cover on the black bikes a Matte finish or are they glossy like the tank? I seem to see both online?!
2. My 1980 has a 150 MPH speedo. Is this correct. I was understanding the US model had an 85 one. Perhaps that was after 81?
3. Gauge faces? Where to get new ones. I bought some through a guy called "classic Gauges" off ebay, but I made a simple mistake and ordered the wrong speedo. I asked for an exchange and the guy has been a real bitch to deal with and Ive yet to see the 150 version yet. Ill just need another set of faces. (story later)

I appreciate the answers to my questions. I get mixed answers on the net. Ill post up some photos of the bike soon. It is all original, nothing modified, except for period correct Corbin seat. Was rode by original owner for 40K miles, then he put it into the garage and never rode it again after passing away. Carbs were drained as well as the gastank before it was put away! I was able to hear it run before I broke it down for restoration. And It sounded so good! Im about 1/2 done. All the parts are about restored, and ill be reassembling soon. I found this site recently, and wish I found it sooner, would have been a great help! But better late than never!

Kevin - you can assume your black '80 had black gloss sidecovers. You bike came with an 85mph speedo. Mike Grossmueller (sp) in Florida can do a complete rebuild, new correct faces, needles if necessary, service and test the mechanicals. PM me for contact info, or search him up here.

Another tip - even though the carbs were drained, they likely still have the original rubber in them. Now is the time to break them down completely and do a rebuild. The old o-rings WILL leak at some point. A job you are far and away better off sending out.

See that's why I ask..

My bike was a one owner. It shows 42XXX miles, yet it is a 150 MPH speedo, I assume it to be the original as it was aged with the rest of the bike. . It looks like the fed mandate went into order in early 81. Mine may have been a late 79 "80" and installed with a 150 i guess... This is why im dealing with the gauge face issue in the first place. I guess I should have looked before ordering them!

I've restored a few of the gauges and replaced faces on other model Hondas from similar years. I have mine apart and have already checked the operation. There is no jumping and both seem to work fine. I'm hoping a refresh on the gauges, needles, and trim rings ect will do the trick. This bike is certainly adding up as far as little things.

Take an 80's Honda CB750 and multiply by 3 or 4 and you got the price for the CBX part! if your lucky! LOL.

I am pretty sure you can’t just change the faceplate if you have a 79 speedo and put a new 80 face on. It will function but will not register correctly.

Mike and I talked about that very thing at Barber. He has successfully changed 85mph to 140 mph. Requires re-calibration, but he has done it. That was an unexpected revelation. He also said it is possible to go the other way, he just hasn't done it. Would be rare that someone would want that, but in this case.....
