New to me 1981 CBX owner here

Hello all,
A friend of mine had a CBX squirreled away in his garage that he never got a chance to get to. He offered it to me and of course I jumped on it. Like everything it has a story- 1st owner took great care of it, second owner for some reason stopped riding it and covered it with a horse blanket and three tarps!!!!!!!! (this is how my friend Mike found it). He purchased it as he is a Honda guy (still has a couple of Dreams and another one I had never seen). He purchased it put it in his garage and never got around to doing anything with it. 10years later it is mine!!! Everything on the bike is original with the exception of the tires (has AVON's on it). The bodywork it in good condition as is all of the paint with the exception of the tank. I cannot open the tank as the key will not turn it- really want to get it open and check the status of the tank. I was also able to confirm that the engine is not locked up- moves freely. Over the next week I will tipping the engine to remove the carbs to see how bad they are and go from there.

I have to ask, did you try the key from both sides? Try the key, remove it, turn it 180 and try the other side. Sometimes an owner changes the ignition or the fuel cap and cuts a single key different on each side so they can use one key instead of two.

Drain the tank and rinse it several times, invert it and put a gallon of hot degreaser solution in it, por 15 cleaner degreaser, let it sit inverted, it will leak. Upright and drain and rinse, try again. Heat, penetrating oil, patience above all.

Also try pushing down on the gas cap as you turn the key...

Along with pushing on the cap while holding the key to 'open', you might try a few plastic hammer taps on the cap. Don't bludgeon it. Just some 'luv' taps.

Only one key came with the bike, all of the other locks work with this key with the exception of the fuel tank

I did push down on the cap to no avail, there is no key movement at all. I am going to try all of the ways posted. Thank You all for the ideas, Covid has me home for the next few days :-( may as well make them productive for myself!!!!!

Update-- When attempting to get the lock opened the top of the tank collaped due to the amount of rust inside. New Tank Needed!!! Anyone that has a tank PLEAE message me. Thanking You in Advance
