New member from London ont Canada

Post by Broadys01 »

Hi there. Just want to introduce myself. I’m addicted to motorcycles. Own a 2000 Honda RC51. 1985 Yamaha FZ750. 2009 Yamaha FJR1300. 2018 Aprilia Tuono and now a project 1979z I’ll attach pictures. It’s been sitting since 1987 I’ve torn into many motorcycles. Lots of engine work on Ducati’s. Buell and others. I love that stuff. Im an auto technician that loves bikes and riding them. This CBX is going to be torn apart right down to the crank and rebuilt. My plan is to get her back to a nice looking running rider. It won’t be a minty all oe bike. But as original as I can make her. The frame and carbs are 79z. The engine looks to be 79 however the upper engine case with the serial number is a 1981. I’m wondering if I should look around for a 79 upper case for orig sake. Or just keep as is ?? I have a big list I will be compiling once I rip into her haha it’s going to be fun. My dad had a 1979 he bought in 1980 and owned until 1998. I rode it lots in my late teens. Loved riding it. So this is a bike I really wanted to get to rebuild. Own. Ride and enjoy. Have just paid for a membership and look forward to your advice and help and will use the search function haha.

Welcome! You have yourself quite a project there. Can you verify where and what the engine serial number is? It is very unlikely someone mixed-and-matched case halves. We have speculated over the years that it might be technically possible, but the journal codes would have to match. I don't know of anyone that has actually done it. Give us the number and we'll be able to tell. If it appears to be a mismatched set of cases, you may be better off getting a matched set to rebuild - there will be far more unknowns and they are not that rare to find.

Different case halves, that's a new one to me.

Being from London, sounds like something James Elliott might do.

Welcome to here :-)
You are in good hands for the CBX with many very knowledgeable CBX'ers.
Would that be a 1958 Edsel I see there?? Hard for me to tell without a full frontal :-)
Best,
Phil

The problem with those unmatched case halves, if they indeed are, is that you don't have the top half of the original case to verify crank journal codes. So you'll never know if they matched. Sure, you should plastigauge all bearings, but not sure I'd trust a miss-matched set of cases.

good point Dave, well I will completely tear down, esp to see what cylinders etc are like due to sitting and assess the situation and make list and go from there!

As I said before though, give us the engine number and we'll tell you what the top half is from, at least.

Your top case half is an '81. Apart from the seeming miss-match with the bottom case (why would someone paint an original black bottom case half silver?), the block and head, if original would have had to have the center four stud holes drilled out to use with the larger 10mm studs on the '81 case. Nothing really wrong with that, just more mix-and-match. I would seriously plan on finding a good set of matched cases, in this case '81-'82 since the block and head have been drilled out. Tough to get a good seal on 10mm holes with 8mm cap nuts and sealing washers.

I am never too old to learn something new. I didn't think that the dual headlights came out until 1958.
Thank You,
Phil
