Hi Phil,
What year is your bike ?
With the year I am sure we can find the proper wiring diagrams.
Did you change anything lately that touches the electrical circuit ?
Maybe you accidentally disconnected a lead somewhere ?

Re: Head lamp not working !
Do you own a digital multimeter? Need a quick tutorial on how to use it in concert with the wiring diagram? Step 1 is to verify the silly stuff, make sure all the connectors are connected, fully, in good shape and nothing is brown or crispy. Then check for continuity on each leg of those wires from each end to end. Then (with the key ON) you need to probe the blue (from memory) wire backwards from the headlight socket toward the battery till you find where it's live, and you will have isolated the break or problem. Are you CERTAIN both the high and low beams are testing properly? You're not being fooled by a working high beam, and a dead low beam?
P.S. It's probably a good idea to have the rotary killswitch OFF while you do this or you may kill your battery and overheat your coils.

Re: Head lamp not working !
I am having the same problem. The headlight itself will not come on when I turn on my ignition, but the High Beam works when I use the switch to flash my High Beam for passing other vehicles. I suspect my problem is in my ignition switch. You may be having the same issue. Prior to my headlight not working I would get a slight delay when I would turn the ignition switch on. I have removed my ignition switch and am now in the process of trying to figure out how to disassemble it to clean the contacts in hopes that that will cure my problem. Good luck with your problem. I will be watching to see what your issue is.

Re: Head lamp not working !
The 81-82 manual p19-5 shows how to remove the contact base. For a 79-80 model the key needs to be between “on” and “p” to remove the base vs “acc” for 81-82
Also the pin-out for a 79-80 is different than that of the 81-82 so refer to 79-80 manual for checking continuity.

Check the left bar hi-lo switch also. It is very fiddly to get back together correctly. Possibly someone previously had it apart?

I had to use tweezers to assemble that slide contact thingie, and all the patience I could muster. Definitely fiddly. If you go in there, take pictures at every step, with good light.daves79x wrote: Mon Mar 31, 2025 7:45 am Check the left bar hi-lo switch also. It is very fiddly to get back together correctly.
