Hello Folks

I should have done this first before posting a question but now I am catching up.

I recently acquired a 1980 Honda CBX and am proud to be getting it back on the road again.

New oil in the bike even though the oil was clean. (Bike was last operated in 1988 and only has 8900 km on it)

The tank is nasty and I have drained it of old gas and have it full of vinegar right now trying to get the sludge off the inside of the tank.

Here are a few shots of the bike.

I just pulled the carbs out of the bike and have cleaned them all up in the ultrasonic cleaner and have ordered a set of gaskets and O rings from Randakk as suggested by fellow forum friends

I will pull the brakes apart while I wait for the carb parts to arrive. I have new Avon Roadrider MKii tires being shipped to me so they will go on when they arrive.

I will clean the front forks and put new oil in it when I do the tires.

I am looking forward to getting the bike back on the road again.

Looks like you've got a good one.

On the carbs, the idle jets MUST be extracted to thoroughly clean the circuit it feeds. Ultrasonic alone won't do the job. While they're out you can also clean the cross drilled holes that can't be done in situ along with the .35mm orifice.
I recommend that you replace the connector boots too.

Here it is again with a red line around the idle jet and the line indicating fuel flow up through the body, to the left where it feeds 3 fixed orifices for tip-in and further left where it feeds the mixture screw. Unscrew for more fuel, tighten for less.
Like a ship in a bottle, the gunky debris inside the circuit is too large to come out any of these openings. The only way to provide a way out, is to extract the jet.

Vinegar will not cut old tarry gasoline residue. It's just for removing rust. You need a very strong solvent or a very strong detergent. I use Marine Clean from POR-15. It cuts anything. It's a lot of work to properly clean old fuel residue from a tank, but far worse if there's rust.

Thanks for the tip on cleaning the tank. I will pick up that POR15 cleaner tomorrow at Canadian tire.

As for finding the bike I am going to make you all chuckle.

I put an ad on kijiji looking for a 1979 or 1980 Honda CBX. A lady contacted me stating that she was the executor of an estate and had a motorcycle like the one I was looking for. She advised me that the last time it was driven was in 1988. I thought one of my friends was playing a joke on me.

Anyway, I was sent pictures of the bike and we made an agreement on price based on km and pictures provided to me. We met at the previous owners house and after seeing the bike I purchased it and took it home later that afternoon. I am very pleased and feel lucky that my ad worked out so nicely. The previous owners wife is lovely as is the executor of the estate.

All went smoothly
