Hello Everyone!

My name is Lloyd, and I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I am 31, USMC Veteran, and I'm an owner operator truck driver working on growing my business. I currently team drive with my business partner all over the US.

I've owned a couple of motorcycles so far; 2009 Yamaha V-Star and a 2013 Harley Davidson Road Glide Ultra and a few early 90's CR125s and CR250s. I've been without a motorcycle for a few years now, and I figured the time was right to finally get my own CBX. The '79 CBX has been a huge part of my family's story. My dad always seemed to have one around while I was growing up, but he's been without one for about 20 years now. He's still got a piston with its connecting rod out of one of his CBXs in his toolbox that he somehow managed to bend the connecting rod in three different directions. Mom and Dad actually started dating in the early 80's way before I came along when dad had one of his first CBXs, and mom almost broke up with him because he laid it down on his way to pick her up for a date on it. Something about him being a no-show to pick her up that night made her pretty upset before she realized he ended up in the hospital that night. It must've been a wild time to be in the dating scene before cellphones, lol. Dad used to also race one and he kept a timing slip in his wallet for years and years from when he broke 12 seconds in a 1/4. He dialed in at 12 flat and broke out running 11.79. He was always really proud of that run and loves to tell the story of how he lost that race to some guy on a moped who was wearing flip flops because he broke out.

I currently do not have one, but I'm just starting to get into the market for one. Mostly I'm looking for a rougher '79 that I can surprise him with as a gift and then we can work on it together. I know this is an introduction section and not the classifieds, but I wanted to let you all know my goals and plans and as to why I decided to become a member here.

I'm really looking forward to getting to know everyone here, and hopefully one day I'll actually be a CBX Owner and not just a dreamer.

I read the explanation on how to upload photos, and dug around a little more on here, and found a post from last year that said to just click and drag the picture onto the post and it'll show up, so I'm trying that now. I've got a few more pictures around that I'll try and find and find somewhere to post them once I do. Here's a picture of me as a young man and dad on the last CBX he owned.

Welcome to the site! Great background and story - very cool that you're looking for a project to complete with you dad. Should be some machine lurking in your neck of the woods.

Welcome! A great intro as well. There are a lot of CBXs out there that are on the 'rougher' side. Just know that parts prices and restoration costs can put you under water quickly. My advice is to buy the best example you can afford, and spruce it up as needed. Your dad, certainly, will be shocked at prices for these bikes, parts, services if he hasn't been keeping up with it.

If you do buy a rough project, don't pay over $1500 for it. Guys have paid way too much for these kinds of CBXs, then regretted it. $8-$10K will get you a very nice rider that you can enjoy and upgrade over time. You'll be money ahead.

Float any prospects you find by us here, we're always good for free 'advice'!

Dave

Not that it matters now, but if you'd have been looking a couple of years ago, I re-commissioned a nice '79 from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It's now in AZ. Guys here will probably steer you to a few prospects.

Welcome to the site, Lloyd.
Seen many pics of two-way bent CBX rods but three-way bent is extra impressive. lol.
Like the sound of a father/son project.
Good luck in your search.

Welcome! Sounds like a great way to spend some time with your father. I have a son your age and we spent many hours doing CBX stuff together as a family, hope you’re project comes together.

Welcome! I’ve found several “less expensive “cbx’s in recent years and restored them. I do every part of restoring myself, painting, mechanical and machine work and save myself a lot of money. That being said it is WAY more expensive than any other vintage honda I’ve restored. Locating parts is hard but fun. There are lots of great people here to help with most aspects of your build.
Have fun!
