New '79 Owner in UK
Hi All. New CBX owner here with a very early CBX.
I'm an experienced CB750 SOHC restorer, but a CBX novice, so here to share and learn.
Looking forward to sharing the resurrection of my bike. Will get some pics up shortly of my previous restorations and my CBX.
James.

Re: New '79 Owner in UK
Welcome James!
I hope you are happy with your new bike. You imported it from the U.S., right?
I am a tad concerned, because the bike with this VIN number was for sale in New York in 2008. back then, it was silver and the mileage was 23,000.
If my records are correct, someone made some changes since then.

Not sure if I have enough posts to send Pm. Could you drop me a Pm EMS with a few more details so I can investigate?EMS wrote: Fri Mar 19, 2021 3:44 pm Welcome James!

I believe the previous owner was Dave Ditner - sadly I hear he’s no longer with us so won’t be able to share any background info.
However, given his good standing in the CBX community I’d be surprised if there was any ‘funny business’ going on.
I’ll share more details as I start to recommission the bike - however, it looks incredibly original / untouched.
Thanks, James

Welcome to the site, James.
Just for a starter, if you are not going completely stock a CB900F headlight shell will be a lot cheaper and easier to find than one from a CBX.

Thanks Steve. That’s good to know, I’ll try and source a 900F unit to use as a temporary replacement whilst I attempt a repair on mine.

James,
Welcome to the site and CBX ownership.
I am in the UK, and restored quite a few now. If I can help in anyway give me a shout - have quite a few parts if you get stuck.
Paul.

Many thanks for the intro. If you could drop me a Pm with your details I’d love to pick your brains if that’s ok?
Well, aside from the cracked headlight and obligatory carb rebuild, the biggest challenge is going to be finding a rust-free tank and a decent tail unit.
What’s most annoying is the tank appears to be the correct early type tank with ‘filled-in’ mounting brackets. My assumption is that this was original to the bike and is definitely original paint. So I was surprised at EMS’s comments above about it being silver back in the 80’s?
James

Again, if you are not needing stock Honda parts LPM Replica in your neighbourhood makes excellent quality tailpieces and side covers.

Re: New '79 Owner in UK
The closed brackets were on almost 4,000 bikes. I have one of these tanks. It does not guarantee that someone did not change the bodywork.
It seems strange that the tank is in poor shape if the bike has only 18,000 miles on it and came form Dave Ditner. Dave preserved his stuff well.
I am usually rather particular with these records and while I cannot say 100% for sure, I think the data I have is correct. The only way to find out is trace the path of the bike back. If it came directly from Dave's estate it may be all correct. If others (like a guy in NY) were in there, who knows what could have happened. CGR sells better than Perseus Silver and lower mileage is always a plus.

JR may weigh in, as he has seen all of Dave's CBX stuff. It was all stored in an unheated tin building for many years, resulting in what you see.

Re: New '79 Owner in UK
About a week or so after Dave passed his widow Susan and son Bob contacted me, looking for some options in selling Dave’s CBX’s and spares, JR seemed like the most sensible choice considering his close proximity to them and his good standing in the CBX community. I hope Dave’s stuff goes to people that will take the hobby forward and prolong the legacy of the CBX and Dave’s contributions to the CBX community!daves79x wrote: Mon Mar 22, 2021 7:25 am JR may weigh in, as he has seen all of Dave's CBX stuff. Here is one of the pictures that Bob sent me of Dave’s building from that day, notice the 82 upfront on the left and I believe I see a CGR tailpiece, center, 2nd row from the back, do these belong to two of our new members here?

Re: New '79 Owner in UK
For some reason I missed this post and just come across it now, you have probably figured out Jeff that I have the White 82 over here in Scotland (see my rebuild thread).
The picture is fascinating in that I can clearly see the right exhaust isnt damaged in the way I am trying to repair now so at least some of the dents on my bike and perhaps James's bike happened after they left Dave's garage.
I hope I am taking this hobby forward and preserving the CBX (and Dave's) legacy as you suggest
