Alternator - Clean Residue from Brushes

Post by george g »

What do you use to remove the build-up of dirt / grime from the stator and surrounding area of the alternator? A friend recommended brake cleaner as it doesn't leave any residue, plus it dries quickly.

Assuming you have the alternator all apart, brake cleaner is fine to get all the stuff out. Most of the fine black stuff is carbon from the wearing of the brushes against the rotor. If it is really grimy, you may have a worn seal behind the main bearing and oil is getting inside. While you have it apart, now would be a good time to rebuild it. Look for a post of mine about rebuilding the alternator (winterizing). Handle the assy with care so the wiring connections don't get broken.

Let us know if you need any more help.

I used the brake cleaner and all looks good. Alternator has been completely overhauled - see topic "Bearing Puller #6201". Now waiting for my battery... I ordered a Westco and arranged to have it shipped to a friend in the USA (since Westco doesn't ship to Canada). Waiting for my friend to forward it up for me. Free trade?! I'll post another topic once I receive the battery.

Thanks.
