Heh Guys - Newbie CBX '79Z Owner

Post by pistonbroke »

Hi All - Great to see so much interest, in what was for me, THE Bike of my youth.... was 15 when the original CBX came out and it shared a bedroom wall with a poster of Farrah Fawcett!! So Fast Forward 40 Years and i finally got one..[The CBX, not a Charly's Angel] :-)

Will have a million questions for you guys, so thanks in advance, that you'll help me here...

Kev

PS - The Bike has some "Factory Upgrades" courtesy of the previous owner, who i know and has the best attitude about old bikes - RIDE THEM.... Wheels, Brakes & Suspension upgrades from a 1983 CB110F.. All period Honda and i want to ride it a bit harder, so all good in my book..

I'll assume the cb1100 swingarm got transplanted so you've got the hardest bit done for suspension upgrades...maybe shocks? race tech fork kit? ..looks to be a well sorted ride, should be good for many miles of enjoyment as it is...welcome to the forum...
CBX a work in progress, still improving...GS1150EFE completed and awaiting modifications.....RD350, remnants in boxes scattered throughout the garage

Wow - thank you all for the responses, wasn't expecting any.. Cool :text-thankyouyellow:

I wont bother y'all just yet, but instead spend a day or two looking at previous posts to gauge opinion on the Delkevic replacement exhaust systems, as this has the original and is on its last legs.

With the wider 1100F swing arm, the stock or replacement exhaust needs additional clearance at the rear wheel centre bolt and nut and Delkevic can't do that, so i am looking for a place in So-Cal that might be able to do the indentation nicely and/or re-chrome if it would be needed (me + Hammer = not good).

The other thing i would like to add is a pair of Oxygen sensors in each tailpipe, as the bike has a bit of a flat spot in low rpm, and i'd like to see what the mixture is doing when this happens to be able to tune the carbs to make this better - i have an AEM Lambda kit that will tell me that if i fit two Lambda sensors (and welded bosses) to the exhaust...

Again, thanks for the replies all of ya.. :D

There should be no axle issues using the 1100F swingarm and the stock exhaust - I've done it several times. The carbs should be verified perfectly clean and all functions working properly before starting to re-jet. Once the carbs are right, going to #68 primary main jets and #38 pilot jets will help if the bike still has issues.

+1 on what Dave said re getting carbs clean first and then (maybe) upping the jet sizes.

Re fitting the two Lambda sensors, I'm not yet clear on how this will help? For example, if the sensor on the LH muffler reads low or high, how will it tell you which cylinder to adjust - 1, 2 or 3 ?

Our erstwhile and very respected Preston Marks on here has a test bed on which he test runs and tunes all his engines before shipping to the customer. IIRC he has mounted a Lambda sensor on each header pipe which means you can find the offending cylinder in a jiffy.

If you do decide to rebuild the carbs, then there are many on here who sell great products to help you on the road to enlightenment, including MIke Nixon (http://www.motorcycle projects.com) and Randall Washington (http://www.randakks.com).

That's a really lovely example you have found there Mr Pistonbroke, with some really sweet 'period correct' inclusions, not the least of which is the Euro low bars kit and the twin piston calipers. Noice!

You're going to really, REALLY love this well sorted bike.

Great feedback guys thanks again. Have ordered the Delkevic replacement system as the 40 yr old original is rotted through at the left bank collector so i’ll Just see how that system looks for clearance on the rear axle bolt - has a very thick nut on the right side, might gain some right side clearance to the muffler by putting the axle in from the other side.

Good point on the twin Lambda sensors :D not used to 6 cylinders under there ! Will try the jetting suggested here if still same flat spot with new exhaust.

Has anyone had issues with gas fumes in the garage with this bike ? Realize old carburettored engines have open vents and no charcoal filters, but garage reeks of gas after just one night of standing and there’s no fuel leaks ?

Will start posting on specific subjects from here out, and not the newbie page - sorry

Cheers Kev

You’ll smell evaporated gas if the bike is good and hot, then parked in a garage. If that’s your situation, it’s pretty normal. But if the bike is just sitting there cold, you should NOT smell gas. Make absolutely sure you don’t have a hydro lock situation and/or a crankcase full of gas.
