VIN Identification 1980 Black CBX in Canada

Post by ROBSKIP »

I have just signed up for this website because I have recently found and purchased an original CBX in western Canada. I worked for Honda Motor Europe for 12 years but didn't know that the CBX has it's own method of ID.

Basically my Engine number is: SCO3E - 2003351 frame number: SCO3-20011386.

It is all totally original and I was wondering whether there is any way to check out if these numbers are genuine and original?

Welcome! Your '80 CBX engine is indeed original to that frame. Your frame is number 1386 made in Marysville, OH. The frame tag will state that - 'Made in USA of US and Japanese Parts'. The frame numbers started over for the '80 models when their production moved to Marysville from Japan. The first 1800 or so '80s were made in japan and their engine numbers followed Honda's standard system of being a few numbers different than the frame. When production moved, however, Honda did not start the engine numbers over, so every Marysville bike will have an engine approximately 1800-2200 higher than the frame. The first Marysville bike's frame was SC03-20010001.

Rest assured that you have an original '80 CBX. Is it red or black? It seems more Marysville bikes were black, and the Japanese bikes were about even red and black. There are a couple of very minor differences in the Marysville bikes - one being that the bottom rear engine mount bolt is now an actual bolt with a washer and nut. The '79s and Japanese '80 had a rod threaded on both ends there with two nuts and washers. All CBXs after had the bolt and nut.

Hi Dave, thank you very much for the information. The bike is indeed Black and has the high bars as discussed in another persons posts. It's always interesting for me seeing what other markets have as i have been used to seeing all the UK bikes.

I'm just about to start to either restore it to pristine condition or just clean it and get it running smoothly then sell it to someone who want to give it some TLC.

I know it's not really the thing to do but I'm interested to know what you think it's worth?

Thanks again for the info.

Value all depends on mechanical and cosmetic condition. The more original the better. I’m partial to the ‘80 model over the ‘79 since it is a much better bike in nearly every way. But it would have to be very, very nice and original to be worth $10-12K. Look at eBay completed auctions.
