New guy from Wisco

Post by Keith64 »

New CBX owner here. After looking for months for a 400f I found one for sale, the guy also had an old 79 CBX for sale so I grabbed them both. The CBX is titled with 11k miles but in rough shape, hasn't ran in over 10 years.

I plan to start working on the CBX later this year, first get it mechanically sound then work on the cosmetics. I'm new to vintage bikes so I'll start on the 400f first.

I look forward to learning from you all on what to do and what not to do!

Welcome Keith, she's a beauty!

You couldn't of picked a better bike to pop your vintage cherry on and there are plenty of knowledgeable forum members here to answer any questions you may have along the way.

Good luck and enjoy the journey :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

Hi,

Welcome to this forum where I have learned so much about these bikes, and what a beautiful bike you bought. In order to be in top condition you still have some work to do.

The front fender does not seem to be the original :!:
.
My current bikes:
Honda CBX1000Z 1980 | Honda NC700S 2012 | Honda CB1100F Super Bol D'or 1985 (needing restoration, not yet started)
BMW R1200GS Rallye 2017 | BMW K1600GT 2012 | BMW R100RS 1978

When I try to explain why I ride a motorcycle, for those who have never experienced no explanation is possible! for those who ride motorcycle no explanation is needed!

Thanks guys. Yeah looks like a lot of work but I'll do it bit by bit and try to get it back to original.

Yup front fender is chrome, I haven't looked at it close enough to see if it's been coated or what.

when you repaint the tank don't lose the rubber bumpers on the front of the tank (I see one at least in the photo) ...those are commonly lost or thrown away on repainting, the first clue as to the bike being original or repainted...

Hey wyly, I'm afraid the rubber on those bumpers have committed suicide and jumped off. :laughing-lettersrofl:

It's the metal clip left behind when the rubber cracks and falls off.

The rubbers, if even present, are cracked and beyond use. And the clips are usually rusty. You can still get the clips and rubbers overseas, but not from Honda US. Louis likely has both also.

Actually, I see the clips are available here from Honda, but not the rubbers. Honda calls them 'moles'.

It still amazes me no one knows what the moles are actually for.

I think it is to keep from hitting the edge of the tank (Ie.. Paint) on the frame when servicing.
