Time for "paying back"

Post by zebulon »

...and not just lurking around.

Hi folks, all my CBX knowledge is coming from this site, thanks for that !

I am from Germany and found my 79 CBX this summer. :D
I have a small collection and sold some 400cc stuff in favor of six cylinder.
The bike is quiet original, except some engine parts are polished.
She has an idle problem, so I bought THE BOOK to talk me through the carbs an read most of the carb related topics.
Will also do a little bit of detailing here and there.

Very nice 'find', Zeb! Good fortune with the idle/carb thing. Usually a matter of diminished volumetric capacity in the idle circuit. (That's bs for clogged idle jets!) Plenty of knowledge here to help you with that one. Keep us posted. We always enjoy hearing success stories.

Merry Christmas

Welcome to the site, Zeb.
Check the front brakes as well. The discolouring on the front right disc is a bit off.
What else beside the V-Rod have you got lurking in the next room?

Thanks for the warm welcome.

So far my bikes are: 2007 Bimota DB6, 2008 Benelli TNT 1130, 1992 Honda VFR 400, 1985 Honda CBX 550, 1979 Honda CBX 1000, 1985 Kawasaki Z1300, 1989 Yamaha FZR1000 Exup, 1992 Kawasaki ZXR750K, 1993 Yamaha YZF750SP, 1994 HD Heritage Softail Nostalgia, 2006 HD VROD VRSCSE2, 1985 Kawasaki GPZ900R, 1996 Ron Simms Harley.

By coincidence, while studding old bike magazines collecting infos for my Z1300, I came across the "clogged strainer symptom" on those bikes.
Honestly, beeing a patrol head all my life, I never looked at this  just doing the regular stuff like oil filter change. Of course that symptom is everywhere and most bikes will probably have a similar strainer. I changed my maintenance thinking...

After sorting out the Z, CBX was next. It wasn't as bad as the Z, but now I know it's clean.

Happy Holidays!

CBX and a KZ1300. Seems you only need the Benelli 750 Sei to complete the set.

Yes, maybe one day...

Meanwhile I removed the carbs but without tilting the engine.
I detached the throttle cable at the grip, loosen the airbox and removed the airbox ducts which leaves enough room to get the carbs with cables out.

To increase the gap further more, I pulled the box back with a strap (not shown). It worked for me.

Carbs have vacuum valve and the 1979 overflow hoses, which I learned should both be removed.
However, the bike has survived 51000 miles with this setup.

I applaud your 'enginuity', but you did yourself no favors by shortcutting the carb removal process. Those intake-side airbox boots were never meant to be removed like that and are meant to be sealed. It is extremely difficult to get the boots back in correctly. It only takes 1/2 hour to lower the engine once you master the drill - which, if you plan on CBX ownership for any length of time, will have to be done. You will have much more time in fiddling with the airbox and you still may not be sure you have everything seated correctly.

Your '79 was retrofitted with the vacuum valve, probably at the dealer. They will fail eventually, but I'd keep using it until it does. You may some day just seem to run out of gas or, as was recently discovered, may flood #3 cylinder if the valve fails. Carry on!

I dreaded having to tilt the engine to do the carb removal and reinstall, but it turned out that the tilting process (both ways) was the easiest part of the job. :D
Check your rubber carb to engine donuts. Mine turned out to be aftermarket plastic replacements that had developed cracks and holes that leaked air. Replacing them made a world of difference on my bike.
And, Wyly found a slick way of reseating the carb intake boot assembly while tilting the engine back up.

yeah the dreaded engine tilt, I'd do anything to avoid that...but as Dave says once you figure out the procedure it's easy...

my last carb removal took 2hrs to tilt, pull out carbs for inspection, replace carbs and then lift back into position...

Yeah, I did it my way ...

I found missing washers and o-rings on the pilots and banks out of sync.
Did all the cleaning, incl. ultrasonic etc. and put everything back on the bike. That went quiet well and took 15 minutes max. Used the strap method I found on cbxworld.
Test run soon, but I am prepared to do it all over again
