Hi from sunny England!

Post by Mrloudly »

Hi all! Thought you guys may like to see the project I'm just finishing off! Paintwork looks nice from afar but is far from nice close up... Will do until Winter though. Final job is carb balancing and she's good to go!

Thanks for looking!

Cheers!

Welcome to a great site,
the knowledge on here is superb (but not mine)
I have the same bike, just need a garage the same size as yours.

Thanks all!

I got the bike about eight years ago as a rough runner. Alloys weren't Comstars and there were a load of non-std parts fitted to the bike... I kept the bike running but she was burning some oil and needed a bit of TLC. Back end of 2015 I decided to bite the bullet and get stuck in to it. 38,000 miles and on strip-down the bores were original and mint :-) New rings, bores honing and valve guide seals were all that it really needed! Thankfully I had access to a surface grinder to sort out the valve clearances and she's pretty much ready to ride :-) I did have the carbs overhauled by a watchmaker ;-) but apart from that she's all my own work :-) The paintwork needs doing properly but I'm after a UK spec tail fairing before this is done. I believe it is a UK bike but guess somebody has got hold of the cut tail piece during previous work. Any way of finding out about the engine and frame number origins?

Cheers!

what's a UK spec tail fairing? how is it different from any other? 79's had no lid and 80's did... if you need a '79 tail replica Bert at SCM http://www.sixcenter.nl/index.html will have them for less than a damaged oem tail and they're identical... a '79 NOS tail about $900US

frame and engine number, I think our serial number guy EMS quit the forum but Dave 79 could probably help you...

what I think I know! there's no connection between engine and frame numbers, 78/79's originated in Japan, 80's originated in japan and USA, honda kept lousy records... if you were to go to the other cbx forum (cbx world) there is a registry for serial numbers.

Mmmm got me thinking now... My tail fairing has no lower rear sides that cover the rear light mounting bracket. I was under the impression it was from a US bike as they required side reflectors because of reg's, this had them fitted. Sure somebody told me this before, the tail unit I have does look OEM :? Anyhow, thanks for the links to source a replacement!

Cheers

I can't see your tail cowl clearly in the pic but from what I can make out and what you're saying there are pieces missing? this is the OEM tail on my N American 79 that I repaired last year 6462, it's identical to a replica I bought from Six Center...if Bert at SCM doesn't have one which is unlikely, David Silver sometimes has it.

Think it's a little clearer here ;-) I can't understand why somebody would remove the lower section? Also what are the holes in the rear lamp mounting bracket (filled with rubber grommet here) for? I've just heard back from the Six Centre and they have one in stock , good news!

Thank you all again for your help, much appreciated!

They should be rubber stops to cushion the tail piece - one on the top of the chrome bracket, one on each side of the rear light mounting bracket (all three are the same).

The previous owner may have broken a corner off the tailpiece and then decided to "customize" it by removing it instead of a repair.
Not an uncommon spot to see damage.
Notice in another thread you have other bikes hiding under sheets.
Spill it Brother! What else you got?

yup, I was thinking the exact same thing...I did the same with the cooling fins of my oil filter cover, I filed down the good fins to match the contours of the damaged fins, even other CBX owners haven't noticed the difference :D

Seems an odd place to damage although I guess it could be vulnerable if you dropped the seat ;-) Well spotted on the sheets LOL I'm a serial restorer, it keeps me out of the Pub LOL There's a couple there, these three being my favourites ;-) Next on the operating table is a CX500 Turbo. It\s in reasonable condition but has stood for a long time, wish me luck ;-)
