help were does this go
hi,
I have a tims replacement alternator fitted, which is over charging,
but when I removed the alternator I found this at the bottom of the adaper, does it push into the end of the splines on the shaft coming from the engine to reduce the oil flow.
if it does, can I just push it back into place.
any help would be appriated.

Neil,
Yes - it goes in the end of the shaft as you suggested.
I think it's tapered, so will only go in one way around.

I learned a hard lesson with that very thing. I had some accumulated resistance in my wiring harness that was causing the alternator to go 'full field', charging my battery at 15.5V. This is one of those cases where more is not better as you probably already know. I fixed this by replacing the harness altogether, with one of the excellent repros that FallDownPhil sells, mostly because I knew there were poorly done repairs on my harness. But not before overcharging and eventually destroying a perfectly good battery while I dragged my feet on the issue. So definitely get to the bottom of that charging issue stat, that's my free advice.

I will fix the part back in the shaft.
I put a new dave silver harness on the bike when I rebuit it 2 years ago, so i will have to check all the connectors for damange or corrosion.
I did take the cover off the alternator last night, and found the wire with the black marker on it had been cut and a poor soldering job done, it was rapped with what looked like gaffer tape, I have re soldered it and heatshrinked it,
I will give it a try today, and hopefully that will fix the problem.

the harness is all ok, connection all clean etc.
I have tested across the battery with ignition off and battery shows 12.79v. full charged.
if I switch the ignation on and test from battery negative terminal, to the wire that is soldered on to the regulator in the alternator, I a get the same reading 12.79v.
is there another way of testing the regulator.

I would say the voltage regulator is faulty.
I have found some one in the UK who supplies the alternator and coversion kits, so i have emailed him to see if he can help.

I exchanged voltage regulators in mine thinking the same thing. It turned out that some other wiring fault caused the alternator to go full field. The regulator is a small assembly under the cap of that alternator, easily R&Red. Have you been in touch with Bill Brint? I have emailed bill and explaned the issue, he seemed to think it was the regulator, and rick's motorsport electrical in hampsted in USA would supply them.
it was a used part but, i have only done 500 miles with it on the bike, but I guess with it was a used part, and that is the risk you take it was $700 thought, as it came with the adpter plates etc.
