New from Lubbock, TX 2 projects

Post by sparkybr74mr »

Recently became the owner of two CBX's. One is a 79 and the other is an 81 model. Both are in need of a lot of work as they have been sitting for decades.

Well aren't you the tease. Just one photo showing a gorgeous dark cherry tank? More please.

Oh, and welcome.

I became familiar with the 81 when I was 16 years old and saw it outside a local motorcycle shop (I'm 46 now). It was pretty much stock except for the handlebars, had yellow plug wires and a 6 into 1 exhaust. The 6 cylinder is what really got me. A couple of years later I became friends with the owner who could ride like no one I've ever known, I was 18 and riding a 1986 Ninja 1000r and could hardly keep up with him while negotiating turns on the back roads. I have been after the bike all these years until two weeks ago when I called him once again to see if he would sell and he said yes. Not only was he willing to sell me the 81, but he offered the 79 as well. I took both. They have been sitting for years and need a little loving care, but I as as happy as a puppy with two peters. I put the bikes together for a couple of snap shots and tore them back down to begin the restoration work.

Thank you for the photos !!
You may have some work to do but there is plenty there to keep you inspired.
You are in the right place for any questions you may have, and you will.
Oh, by the way, your carbs most likely need some work
Very Best,
Phil

Yup, got the carbs off of the 79 already, air mixture screws on 4 carbs are not budging and I dont want to break tips, (any advise would be appreciated) also have the tank at a radiator shop to have it cleaned, gonna loose the paint, but plan on repainting anyway, over a decades worth of rotten gas turned to the most foul smelling sludge I would have never imagined. Carb kits are on their way from Randakk's now.

Heat up the castings with a pencil torch, that should loosen up the mixture screws.
You should also get Mike Nixon's book on rebuilding CBX carbs. It is worth every penny if you are going to do your own carb work. You can find it on his website. http://www.motorcycleproject.com
That is a website loaded with information for you. Plan on (must do) removing the pressed in idle jets for cleaning. They are found under the rubber plugs.
Very Best,
Phil

Ok, I used a heat gun, penetrating oil, and lightly massaging. I will look up the pencil torch and work with that. Thanks

Put some local heat on the orifice where the tip of the mixture screw resides in the throat of the carb body, be careful with the heat so you don't melt the small O-ring used to seal the mixture screw to the carb body. I have some pics of a carb body that's been split in halves so you can trace all the orifices and passages.

Give me a couple mins to find them and post them up.

PS Nice snag, looks like the previous owner enjoyed those CBX's quite a bit, seems like your persistence certainly paid off.

Yeah, you go look for the pics of the carb while your faithful companion "guards" your dinner.
I want to see the after photo.
