Hello from New Orleans

Post by Dewey »

Hey everyone,

My name's Hillard Snelling, I live in the New Orleans metro area. I'm a retired aircraft mechanic, among other things. I traded an old Bultaco Persang 370cc bike of mine for this 79 CBX vin is CB1-2021321.I added the vin because this is an interesting bike. It has never been titled. It was a demo model at GN Gonzales. A large motorcycle dealership in the Baton Rouge area. I traded a very nice bike I had spent over a year getting the correct parts and repairing anything needed. I had about 4,000$ in the 370. So the owner called me up wanting to buy my Bultaco, I gave up riding on the street 20 years ago. Just went back to motocross with my 83 Maico Spider MC 500, Bultaco, I also have a 91 new KX 500. Plus a Polaris I use to hunt and train my dogs with.
So I get the CBX its in not bad shape. But getting a title for it is a challenge, heres why. Mr. Gene received this bike from honda in 78 as a demo model. Only to be ridden by employes and sit on display in his show room. It was supposed to be returned to Honda. GN Gonzales is a Huge shop, Google it and check it out. Well Mr.Gene took the bike and slapped a dealer tag on it and rode the bike himself, after putting 28k miles on it, He put it in his collection. After his death his collection was auctioned off. So now I have the bike, I have it running. Its odd for example, the headlight bezel has a hood on it. I never have seen that on another cbx. All the bike really could use is a new pair of shocks, and New turn signals. I will have to get some crome replated, but just minor stuff. I was thinking of putting a new pair of Ohlins shocks on it. The piggyback style, yellow triple rate springs with gold anodized reservoirs. Yeah about 1000 bucks for a pair. But I always go with the best. So anyway I will try to posts some pics. And thanks for any info you may have on this bike. Looks like I will have to take some pics of it at a later time. Seeing. THe attachment doent access my photo gallery.

Interesting story.
One thing puzzles me, however. The bike has a very high serial number. Only 24950 serial numbers were issued for 1979 models. According to my records, yours was built in January of 1979. It is unusual, that that late in the program, the dealer gets a demo model from Honda. And it really could not have been in 1978. If it is a U.S. spec bike, you can confirm the build date by checking the VIN plate on the steering stem in the right upper corner.

No telling, I'm just repeating what I was told. You probably are right. It must have been a 79 demo.

I'm not a CBX expert. I'm a Mopar expert. LoL. I own three Mopar race cars. The shocks pictured as you can see have the gas chambers to the site rather than behind the shock.

Make sure, you get the correct fitting Öhlins shocks. I think HO140 is the correct number. On some models the adjustment knobs on the reservoir connection interfere with the chrome bar for the seat/tailpiece.
The headlight visor is an aftermarket piece you can buy at a Harley dealer. Stock part for any 7" headlight

How about turn signals? Any new units that fit good? Mind are pretty brittle and faded.

Yes I spoke to Ohlins USA, this may not be the correct pic but. I spoke to a tech and asked him about the very same thing. He said yes they would fit. I could go with the Ohlins factory looking shock with a black spring for about 700$.

You can resurrect the signals just fine. Better used or NOS ones are a fortune. Could be a decent bike after total recommissioning. Sitting so long-it needs gone through completely. I'd say history of the bike is a lot urban legend. As Mike said, the bike wasn't built until '79. Many of those high serial number '79s sat in crates unsold for some time. Guessing the dealer just put one together and rode it. Too bad the MSO isn't available - getting a title these days is a nightmare. But worth doing - bike looks like it will make a nice rider. Holler if you need help!

I can't believe how negative some are. No there is no urban legend. The guy I got the bike from knew none of this. I researched the bike. The state police gave me a document that it has never been registered. Miss Kelly at GN Gonzales, was who I spoke to. She KNEW EXACTLY WHAT BIKE I WAS TALKING ABOUT !!! She said yes I know the bike, it was Mr. Genes personal bike. Its was a demo bike, which never came with a title... Because IT WAS SUPOSSED TO BE RETURNED TO HONDA!!! What a bunch of MORONS, on this site. YOU SOUND JUST LIKE THE STATE TROOPER WHO TOLD ME IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR A BIKE NOT TO HAVE A TITLE! Then I went and got a document from the state troopers STATING THE BIKE HAD NEVER HAD A DAMN TITLE. Do you m8nkeys want a picture of that also? Geese what a bunch of think they know it all bitches.... I've been a mechanic all my life, are you going to give me pointers on what should be done? Its DONE,OVER FINNIE....THE BIKE RUNS GREAT. POWER IS VERY STRONG, I BELIEVE ITS OVER 110 HP. WHAT YOU BITCHES UPSET CAUSE YOU OWN AN 80 OR NEWER. GEEZE. THANKS FOR NOTHING.

Hey Dewey, don't judge us all from the contact of just two members, we're not all "know it all little bitches, take me for example, I'm dumb as hell, we should get along just swimmingly.

Thanks Jeff,
I wrote a long post it didn't popup, responding to the silly comments. But anyway I'll write it again. I rode pro MX from1980-86, I was in the military at the time. I stopped riding street bikes ABOUT 1990. I still ride MX today. My first post may have been in error about the year maybe 79. IDK really. I stopped riding street bikes because I loose my mind on them. Yes I can take a KX 1000 and ride a wheelie for a mile at 10 mph. I have a few skills. But I just turn into a nut on a bike. So I thought it better to just stay off them.
Anway did any of you check out the bike shop I mentioned? Its one of the biggest motorcycle dealerships in the USA.
http://www.gngonzales.com
So let me ask a few questions to the monkeys with the negative responses.

The bike was the personal bike of the shop owner. He loved this bike.
It's never been registered or titled.
It isn't a stock bike.
I would guess 120 hp or more.
The compression has been raised, you can tell by how hard the bike spins over.
I have the factory carbs in a box. The bike has larger carbs on it, so the factory air box won't fit it.
I'll know more about hp after I get a title, tag and insurance.then get a chance to check 1/4 mile times and top end.
The cams aren't factory. There is no telling how much head and engine work this bike has had done to it.
Ok all you " experts" tell me the last time you saw a CBX WITH DUAL FUEL PETCOCKS?
My attention right now is to get the bikes paper work in order so I can hit the open road with it.
The exhaust isn't factory. It has kerker pipes on it. No back foot pegs. I have them. I have several boxes of factory parts that came off this bike. But I don't own something unless it is RADICAL.
I HAVE FOUR RACE BIKES AND THREE RACE CARS. I built them all myself, other than this CBX.
I used my real name, Hillard Snelling. Look me up on FB. Add me as a friend just send me a message with CBX in it and I'll know your a biker. I'm not hiding from no one, no ones hiding from me. But do me a favor, if you can't carry on a conversation with out the know it all attitude, I would be a good person to stay away from. I build my machines the way I want them..I take constructive criticism very well. I'm not a know it all. I'm constantly learning. But the cbx is one of the few Jap bikes I would ever own.

O.K., listen, Mr. Dewey! Nobody is being negative here. You come here for help and we will try to provide it. You tell a story that is of interest to all of us and we try to point out a few things that do not jive.
Frankly, I don't really care how big the shop was and how well-known the owner was. There are a lot of tall stories floating around about the CBX and some of them are being repeated over an over.
It is for the benefit of all, that "urban legends" are being identified as such. Some even made it all the way into Ian Foster's great books.
If you like to have someone brown-nose you and tell you that the bike you have is the greatest CBX around, exchange private mails with those who stand by and butter you up.

I cannot help, but somehow I remember a "Dewey" we had a problem with either here or on another site.

Every thing I stated were facts. I learned them from speaking with the owners sons and his secretary.
I don't need any brown nosing. Or whatever your evaluation of me is. I'm happy with this cbx. I know it's not the fastest or best handling bike out there. This is the first time I've ever been on this site. Dewey is a Nick name. It's pretty common. But to drop the name and say you had problems with a guy with a Nick name that KINDA SOUNDS LIKE MINE?/ that's pretty 3rd grade.

Hey Dewey from the pic you posted your CBX's suspension and brakes look stock, they were barley adequate when new. From the discription of your riding style you'll hit their limits very quickly, new Öhlins or not. While your waiting for your paper work to get sorted you might want to browse the brakes, handling and suspension sub forums. There is great info on rebuilding and or upgrading the brake and suspension components, everything from period upgrades to USD forks and single sided swingarms.

Slow your roll, hangout and have some fun here.
