My $750.00 82 CBX

Post by demoderbydave »

Like many of us here who probably always lusted after the MIGHTY CBX years ago, I always wanted one. AND since I am a GLUTTON for PUNISHMENT I couldn't just go buy a decent one...I have to find a sorry unloved and neglected one that I can dump more time and money into than it will EVER be worth...But to me that's more than HALF the fun of it...PLUS it is similar to ones spouse SLOWLY killing them with anti-freeze in their Gatorade, you don't feel it all at once in the wallet and its easier to hide the money from the Missus...

The motor turns and it "ran when parked" many moons ago. The gas tank was so full of rust and sludge that it went straight in the scrap bin along with the smelly seat (saved the pan) and other than missing the saddlebags (couldn't care less about them as I also have a Honda Gold wing 1800)it is all there. This is far from my first restoration but it WILL be my most ambitious one...assuming the motor turns out to be useable. the carbs are not completely frozen but that will be one thing I will DEFINITELY farm out. Every other part will need attention but winters can be long in New England and it will keep me out of the bar rooms...

I figured i'd introduce myself and say hi. Anyone got a tank and seat they want to donate to the save the sad CBX fund? :laughing-lettersrofl:

I already KNOW what many will say...its cheaper to buy one in decent shape...but to me this is similar to rescuing a neglected animal and slowly saving it. I have other bikes to ride so this will be a "when its done, its done" type of deal. :sad-roulette:

:text-feedback: :text-thankyouyellow: :twocents-02cents:

so you found this forum too, welcome... :D

yeah if I did what was sensible I wouldn't have rebuilt my Z either, far less expensive to buy a running example...but where's the fun in that? The challenge, the search for parts and deals, swap meets, meeting new cbx friends, the pride that comes with accomplishment of learning new things.

I've never seen a cbx tank in that condition

It is an effort to be commended, but do not expect to find many to "donate" to your cause. For years now, some have made a pretty buck of selling used parts to those who need them. Others, who used to help out other enthusiasts from supplying parts from their parts stashes have become frustrated of being taken advantage of. Now, even the guys who only know how to turn a wrench counter-clockwise have learned that everything, that has the moniker "CBX" attached to it - even stuff they don't know what it is - , is worth a lot of money.
So, when you started to get involved into the resurrection of a CBX, you entered the world of "spending money". For a good seat and a good tank that need no work, you look at more than what you paid for that whole bike!

:text-welcomewave: To the group.
I would have gladly payed that just to get the motor.
Good on you for planning to restore it

Nice project, you can make a nice run around with a lot of time but not huge expense. Probably better than trying to make a minter out of it.
good luck.

I do not expect anyone to GIVE me any "donations" for this project. As far as this being a money pit goes...AIN'T THEY ALL? :sad-roulette:
I have already gotten a couple of leads on a seat and tank and they are not a $750.00 combined...nowhere near it to be exact...But I HAVE plenty of time to look...

if it were mine I'd toss the fairing and convert it to a naked version with a 8" headlight...

Be prepared to pay a good amount of money. 8" Suzi headlights are a pretty penny.

Had a friend back in the day who had a GS1100. 8" headlight and a power band like a 2 stroke. Always wondered how the 8" headlight would look on my CB400f.

cbx owners are used to paying a pretty penny for everything so it'll be normal...
