Hope this isn't too much of a hijack, but speaking of Dr. Tom's bike - I got to see it again at Barber last weekend. He (well, his rider) and Will Brint each were racing CBX's in the heavyweight (who knew?) class. Tom's rider was duking it out for 1st place with 2 other bikes until lap 4 of Saturday's race when the oil temp went to 325 and he backed off, but still took third. Then his Dyna ignition puked on the cool-down lap and he had to be towed in. Bill from TIMS had a spare ignition and both were back out Sunday. Same thing, but after 2 competitive laps, Tom's bike's oil temp skyrocketed and he bailed out at the pits. Post-mortem seems to be an incorrectly plumbed oil cooler was to blame.

Will's bike (TIMS) ran flawlessly and he finished maybe 6th on Saturday and 4th or 5th on Sunday, not exactly sure. We have excellent action shots of both and will post some soon.

Dr Tom's bike, as Mike said, is seriously modified for racing. The engine is indeed repositioned and makes north of 115 rwhp. He had every bit the power of the Kawasaki and Suzuki he was running with and the sound is not to be forgotten. You could tell where he was on the track over everyone else. TIMS bike is not too shabby in that department as well. Both bikes represented our beloved CBX very well.

I'll post more in a separate thread - now back to the regularly scheduled program.

[quote="EMS"]I was just wondering, if putting a CBX engine into a 999 frame would have been an alternative. I have toyed with a similar idea, as I have a spare 916/996 frame sitting in the basement...

I had a similar thought about that as well , but the duc engine is all part of the "stress member" unlike the CBX where it hangs onto the frame/stress member.Good to know I'm not the only one with odd thought's.

In a way, the CBX engine is a "stressed member". The frame has no downtubes and the engine housing contributes to the structural stiffness of the whole unit. What made it unlikely to work for me, at a glance, was that the Duc engine reaches into the trellis frame with the rear cylinder and thus can be mounted higher. The CBX motor would not allow that and the engine would sit even lower than in the original frame.

Good point , my thoughts were more along the lines that the swingarm will not go through the motor like on the Duc ?

Thad Wolff on Dr. Tom's CBX #37x of note is that Thad is working on building his own CBX. I donated a frame and a few other pieces. He is a good friend and former AMA Pro. Will Brint is on #118 and Dennis Parrish is on 1R.

Phil: Please tell me that you weren't at Barber this weekend! If you were, so sorry we all missed you. We had the best crowd of CBXers ever at Barber - 17 for dinner Friday eve and 19 Saturday eve.

Thank you very much Dave,
No, I wasn't there. I have really been kicking myself in the rear for not having been there. There were many of my good friends out on the track this year.
Best,
Phil
