I am not sure either, what is the number of plates in the stock clutch? Is the HD clutch called "HD" because it has MORE clutch plates than stock, thus increasing the total friction area?

This is just maddeding -I ran it fo two days now am getting clutch chatter in fourth. - fifth is fine - holds like mad. I did not use fourth - the sweepers are a lot more of a challenge without out 4th

How about a rocketman clutch basket while I'm at it?

Bill, I would just take the thing apart and reassemble. Make sure all springs are O.K. make sure the pressure plate bolts are all in the right position (2 of them are longer than the others). And make sure the friction plates are installed the right way.

OK, I hadn't thought of that.

Just start with an inspection. Good dialouge Mike. Now to find time.

Thanks

Spring is about to spring. I won't find time to do this myself. I'm thinking of taking it to the shop.

I'm reviewing this thread and weighing my options. I could just have them do an inspection with an option to replace aprts. I just "need" to know which parts to use and what the parts will cost for budgeting....

Another alternative to consider is the ICOA Minn Spring Fling Rally which is a technical based event so you will have alot of CBX xperts there that actually work on CBXs the entire day. You might call Jeff Winter and see if they could your fit your bike into the schedule.

viewtopic.php?t=3423

Given all the people that attend this event you might also ask Jeff if he knows anyone that might have a spare clutch to bring along for comparison or even replacement purposes. At any ICOA event there are those that attend that have alot of parts laying around ...in this case, clutches. Sorry to say it, but I had a spare clutch that I gave away......last year.

..I bailed - It's in the shop. The owner (non-Honda shop) recomends original Honda parts for replacement.

Probably a week or better till they get to it. Thanks for the input though guys.

The guy working on it down at the shop has two of these beasts. He has a daily driver and a nicer one.

He took it for a ride. His diagnosis is thatfourth gear is a "pressed" gear. The outer ring has separated from the inner and is spinning under load.

gonna be 'spensive :-(

Ouch! Sorry to hear the bad news. I've been so lucky with mine I guess, the 79 has nearly 50,000 and the 82 nearly 90,000 and so far so good! I do run a different clutch in them and that seems to work very well with both having over 25,000 miles on them. I use EBC frictions and Barnett steels. I've heard that OE frictions are good too. Good luck on the transmission tab.

No chance to do this yourself? Or at least part of it?

Yeah,

I'm getting too much conflicting info. and I can't afford to just have the shop crack it open without being sure. I'm thinking I may just have to mothball the bike for a few years.

I have too many other irons in the fire right now.

Thanks for te support guys
