Re: Startup!!
Gotta thunk a bit more on it. However, given that all the voltages/voltage drops are OK, and listening to the recording, I'm back to thinking it's a starter issue. Something in there perhaps binding just a bit. (The whining noise as the starter spins down.) Gets tighter when it's hot. Assuming the starter bearings are all greased properly, try the 'hammer alignment' technique.
Remove the starter. Then, while holding it in one hand, hit it around both ends with a plastic hammer. Don't try to break it -- BUT, make it felt. A 'tap' on all four sides at each end.
P.S. Similarly, light taps on carb bodies can do wonders for seating float needles and floats after rebuilds.

Re: Startup!!

Re: Startup!!
I took the complete starter apart and do not see any issues apart from the brushes nearing the service limit...

Re: Startup!!
I'm not anywhere near an expert on the CBX starter. My suggestions are based more upon having rebuilt other 'small' motors and rotating things. Seems that regardless how hard one tries, they don't bolt together in perfect alignment. So, a couple taps around the housings at the bearings has usually been helpful. As best I can see in the photos, it appears that something has been 'polishing' the cores in the housing. Either alignment or bearing wear. I would not think those bearings would wear, particularly.
As for the clutch, someone else will hopefully have some good feedback there.

Re: Startup!!
Thanks Larry. I used 2000 grid water paper to polish the armature on the lathe. I may just be the photo but nothing touches anywhere... I am at a loss here! Regards!!

Re: Startup!!
How can I check the starter clutch (gear inside the engine) and how will I know it has a problem?? Regards!

Re: Startup!!
Will I damage something if I remove the battery leads from the CBX after startup? I just want to see if the alternator is supplying "enough" to keep the bike running... or is the battery still needed?

Re: Startup!!
Can you borrow a starter from another CBXer? We have a few in the family, in both Durban and CapeTown.

Re: Startup!!
Hi - good to hear from you!! I tried Dave Wigston in Cape Town... Asked if I bring my starter to him just to try it... was not too willing I guess. I'd be very grateful to go your suggested route. How do I contact the Cape Town family? Much appreciated! Regards!

Re: Startup!!
Brian Hudson is in Durban, he's a good guy. He might be willing to mail you a starter to swap in for yours. Let me try and raise him.

Re: Startup!!
I think you are chasing two problems not one:
1. Something is misaligned in the starter causing armature to touch. With added heat the the armature tightens up even more.
2. Starter clutch nor releasing or dragging.
If the starter is being dragged around by the clutch and there is friction from interference, that friction is heating above any heat coming from the engine, making it worse and worse.
I think the kick you are hear when you shut down the engine is related to the starter clutch too.

Re: Startup!!
I'm guessing Cape Town, in some proximity to Wigston.
