I have my husband's 79 CBX 1000 that he has had a friend working on for over 20 years. He has since passed and I went to pick it up from him. He had replaced numerous parts but he said when trying to start it that he believed the starter clutch isn't working. He said he will not take on this job of replacing that it is just too much work. I am also trying to find out more info through the VIN number. But I cannot find it anywhere.
The VIN is CB1- 2006236. I am wondering if anyone can assist me in finding out more details on the bike. I appreciate any help. Thank you

Re: What do each of the VIN numbers represent
Hello! The serial number won't really tell you much. It is indeed a '79 and was the 6236th built. Honda kept no record of what serial number was what color. Yours is likely a US model - other World market bikes had a few small differences. Being in ND, you will have a hard time finding someone to work on the bike. Would you consider shipping the bike to have it worked on?

If it's a '79 and has been painted I'd guess it was most likely silver. Many of painted tanks I've seen still had their original colour on the bottom side.daves79x wrote: Thu Sep 02, 2021 6:55 am Hello! The serial number won't really tell you much. Re: What do each of the VIN numbers represent
Lori - without a confirmed diagnosis, it's hard to say. If it is indeed the starter clutch and not just a solenoid or starter problem, then the cases have to be split. Not a terribly big job from there. JUST to fix that would be in the $1000-$1500 range probably, but there is always so much more that needs done while the bike is in the shop. If it's been a long time since it has run, you're looking at a complete carb rebuild, brake rebuild, fork rebuild, valve adjustment, fresh tires, etc. This assumes the fuel tank is clean and rust-free. $3-4K is common for re-commissioning bike such as this.
But to give a more precise idea we would need to know a lot more about the bike.
