Hi all.
Having lusted over the CBX since launch over 40 years ago, I've finally managed to find one. Originally sold here in Canada in 1980 with just over 31,000 km on the clock. According to the previous owner, she's never seen a drop of rain in more than 15 years, and that's immediately apparent upon close inspection. Here in British Columbia we have our 'Collector' registration which will take a few weeks once I submit tomorrow, so will have to wait patiently before heading out.
I've completed 2 restorations in the past few years - a 1976 BMW R90s and '83 BMW R100RT so have a reasonable aptitude. However, I'm sure I'll be shouting out to other members until I'm familiar with the intricacies and complexities of the CBX.
Whilst waiting for registration, an oil and filter change is on the cards along with a brake fluid flush.
Is there a specific oil and filter recommended?
Thanks for welcoming me to the forum!
Chris

Welcome! You found the best one - an '80 model. Is it a Japanese bike or Marysville? Do you have service history of big things like carb rebuild, valve adjustments, fork and brake rebuilds? Those are all things that need done to a 40 year old bike. Keep us posted of your impressions.

Re: New Owner from Victoria, BC, Canada
I believe it's US manufacture judging by the lockable space in the tail. The previous owner was meticulous with the upkeep, and I understand the carbs were set about a year ago. Apart from the Delkevic mufflers, she's totally stock. Certainly an easy starter with a steady idle once warm. She's covered an average of 1000km each year for the past 15 years, and oil/filter has been changed every year. Fork seals appear intact. I've just applied for 'Collector' plates, so riding impressions will have to wait for a while. In the mean time, I'll get her on the lift and take my time going over from top to bottom. The only changes considered thus far are LED bulbs (just to increase my road presence rather than for night use) and black, braided brake hoses. I'll probably change the brake pads, dependent on first impressions. Tires and chain have been changed in the last 12m. The frame is absolutely spotless, with zero corrosion evident anywhere. The OEM FVQ shocks are potential candidates for change, also dependent upon riding impressions. If I keep the FVQ's, then they may need some sprucing up as the spring coils are showing some surface rust. Overall I'm stoked with my purchase!

All '80s had the tail trunk. The first 1800 or so were made in Japan, the VIN tag will tell you, as well as the serial number.

Beautiful bike and BC is such a scenic area to ride that beast in.
