Put this on my neighbor's 1100F, off a 750F in Japan.

I'll bet it's really handy. I much prefer the look without. 1979 VICTORIOUS!!!

Many of us updated our suspension at both ends so that's no longer and issue.
Cute tail storage box? Just one more thing that can break and I have pockets.
I'll go with the year that will always have the best resale value, '79.
CBX a work in progress, still improving...GS1150EFE completed and awaiting modifications.....RD350, remnants in boxes scattered throughout the garage

While resale value is important to most, I'll take safety and convenience myself (can't see myself ever selling my CBX while still of sound mind and body anyway :)
Plus, I've had my 1980 since 1982, and driven it every year, so for me, 1980 WINS!
Would be interesting to drive a '79 though, any offers?

For both bikes in stock condition, you would not find any difference. The horsepower difference falls within the production tolerances of internal combustion engines and it is too small to feel. I have ridden 80s that "felt" faster than 79s and vice-versa.
The suspension difference is also negligible.
Actually, if you take 300 mile day trips, the Prolink is the best CBX.

You are right, the thrill of the ride would be close to the same regardless of the year. I do prefer the naked motor look though.EMS wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 7:54 amFor both bikes in stock condition, you would not find any difference. Some would disagree but the '81 and '82 are very good looking bikes as naked rides toodohc24 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 10:48 pmYou are right, the thrill of the ride would be close to the same regardless of the year. Looks are not that important, if you want a bike that takes you comfortably on a daily ride of 300+ miles.
Wonder why you are putting so much effort into making a custom fairing for your naked bike???

Re: 1979 model vs 1980 model, and the winner is...
that makes zero sense...I have a naked bike and another with a fairing, so what? I don't think one is more attractive than the other. I take both on day long 300+ miles rides.
Fabricating a new fairing, the 35 yr old plastic mounting tabs keep breaking, good replacement panels are hard to find, I dislike painting , scratches in alloy can buff out, alloy is lighter than oem plastic...because I was bored and because I can.

Re: 1979 model vs 1980 model, and the winner is...
Great write up. Having a 1979, a 1980 and a 1981 CBX, I have to say that my favorite for all around riding and especially long distance trips is the 1981. It is more comfortable and has a nice, broad powerband. I do get more looks from the 79 though. BUT whenever I’m riding with my wife and she’s riding her yellow 1975 gl1000 people walk by my CBX to look at her goldwing. I think most people just don’t know what it is and everyone knows the goldwing! Sad me

You stll need a white 82, a black 80 and silver 79 to complete the collectionIrishman1 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 18, 2021 2:07 pmC0ADEB5E-A8BA-40CB-B603-BF151336E771.jpegGreat write up. I've had both and kept the 80.
My 79 had an annoying clutch rattle and had to rev it up a bit more when engaging 1st gear from a standstill.

I've never had that issue when my 79 was parked next to any other bike let alone a gold wing...did it occur to you that maybe it wasn't your "wife's" gold wing they were interested in?Irishman1 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 18, 2021 2:07 pmC0ADEB5E-A8BA-40CB-B603-BF151336E771.jpegGreat write up.
