New Member from Louisiana

Post by darbyfam »

Thanks for the add. I just picked up my 79 to add to my "collection" of old Hondas. She joins my 1980 CB750F, 1983 CB1100F, 1983 CX650T, 1984 VF1000F and 2000 CBR1100XX (Super Blackbird).

The CBX is in good rider condition but I will slowly clean her up and get her looking really good again.

Look forward to learning from the knowledge base here.

Darren

Thanks Rick. The XX is ridiculously fast. She might actually be leaving the collection now that I got the CBX.

Welcome to the site, Darby.
Doesn't look like the CBX will need much of anything.
Nice riding stable you have there.

I pulled off the rear luggage rack and swapped the Corbin over to the "stock" seat that came with the bike. I have an OEM seat cover with strap and already ordered the correct moulding for the seat as well.

The front brakes are sticking slightly, so a full brake rebuild is on the list.

The remainder of the work will be cleaning, polishing, plating, etc.

Looking good! You can get a perfectly correct replacement seat cover from Z1 Parts. Then your strap and mouldings will make it perfect. Yes, I'd completely disassemble and rebuild both front and rear brakes. I'd also install a set of black Speigler brake lines - they're the best. JR here is a dealer, probably one close to you too.

Depending on miles, you might also look at replacing the steering head bearings and rebuilding the forks. Ikon also makes a fantastic set of rear shocks that look pretty stock, but are actually shocks instead of the stock pogo sticks. Restocycle may still be able to get you a set, or steer you to where you can.

Thanks Dave.

I have ordered the rebuild kits for the calipers and front and rear master cylinders. Also ordered a brake honing tool (after watching a video on brake rebuilds).

The bike has 18K miles on it and was maintained fairly well by a mechanic. I think the forks and shocks are good.

Thanks for the info!

Let me be clearer - the rear shocks were NEVER good. You will come to loath them if you ride the bike much. Steering bearings will likely be notchy at 20K miles. But you'll never know it unless you take off the forks and carefully check. Also, if the fork seals and oil are of unknown vintage, they should be replaced. You'll have the best experience with your CBX if everything is up to snuff.

Did you get any maintenance history of things like valve adjustment?

Made a few steps towards getting her back OEM-ish again.

Today I installed a proper seat cover, seat strap and seat moulding. Also cleaned her up a little

I have the original side covers in matte black, but for now I like the gloss ones on the bike.

I have also decided to name here Adele. She is a big girl, but her voice is amazing.

Have you seen Adele lately? She is no longer a Big Cruiser but now a light weight Sport Tourer!
