A garage find close to home

Post by Irishman1 »

In June I had my 1979 cbx at a car show and a woman came up to me and said ‘ I have one of these’... yeah, I’ve heard that before. Then she said hers had black wheels though.. her first husband had bought a new cbx in 1980 then died in 84. She kept it in the garage with his other stuff until she remarried. The new husband was a motorcycle guy and knew he needed to keep fresh fuel in it and start it frequently. Well he lost my number and went on a Facebook page to find me. The wife wanted someone to have it and bring it back to the shape it was in back in the day and love it the way her husband did.
Started right up but needs a battery and some cosmetic work. All the brakes were frozen solid.
Stripped her down to the frame, epoxied the frame and swing arm. Painted all black metal parts. Painted all black plastic parts and cleaned and painted the engine. I cleaned, painted and rebuilt all the calipers and masters. New cables and replaced anything else with parts I had laying around

More progress now that’s it’s a little warmer here. I wasn’t happy with the paint job on the engine so I stripped her back down to re sand and repaint. Cleaned and polished the step hangers. I will replace the foot rubbers after I reinstall the the hangers in the bike for ease of removing the old rubbers. Swing arm has been sanders with the side and center stand. I have all new OEM springs, fasteners as I reinstall

I wasn’t happy with my quick clean and paint of the engine last fall so I started over for repaint. With under 7,000 miles it was in pretty good shape but it did have some rough spots.

Diving into the carbs now. They are super grimy from being ridden then stuck in the back of a garage for almost 36 years after the owner died. The wife said she and her son then later her new husband would keep fresh fuel in the tank and try to start it every month. The inside of the tank and inside the carbs look great. The bad thing is the condensation in the exhaust would never get hot enough so the bottom of the mufflers rusted through

I have no idea why so many people have trouble putting pictures up the right way. Every darn picture manager I know of, has a small icon that says "Rotate" or "Flip" and you can rotate your image in 90° or 180° increments or flip vertically and horizontally. While they are quite interesting and tell an awesome story, I don't even bother to look at upside down or 90°-off pictures anymore. I guess its my loss!

A little more progress on her today. I had removed the engine from the frame to repaint it again so with that done I lowered the frame back on the engine. I also disassembled the shocks to clean and polish. I have new replacement decals for them as well.
I did mask the two stamped Japanese calendar dates on the case to preserve them

What pictures are upside down? They all look correct to me on my device’s. Can you be specific on what you are seeing so I can correct it.

On my laptop all the pics need to be rotated clockwise 90 degrees except for the last one.
The photo of your bikes lined up shows correctly.
