Hello From Wisconsin
Greetings from the still snow covered State of Wisconsin.
I don’t know if I will become a CBX owner or not but have my eye on one that’s about a 6 hour drive from me so probably no chance to see it before I buy it.
Like many of you, when I first saw the CBX on the cover of a motorcycle magazine I immediately lusted for it. Problem was I was 20 yr’s old, in the service, had just purchased a 77 CB750K a year or so before and still had a loan on it. Also what was it like $4K and that was a lot of money for a guy in the service (think I paid $1800.00 for the 750).
Anyway flash forward 40 years and I’ve been in the market for another bike not necessarily to replace my current ride (15 Yamaha FJR1300) but to find something with more comfort on the back for my SO. Another Goldwing or maybe the new BMW K1600B. Searching Craiglist I come across a 1980 Black CBX that was stored in a pole barn for some 15 years and my eyes exploded. It has almost 10K on the odometer and the pictures were right after they pulled it from the barn, really just looks dusty, seat has no tears, can’t see oxidation on the motor so I think a good clean and polish will bring it back a bit. Maybe the SO will need to put up with the back seat of my FJR after all I think.
I spoke with the seller and he said it’s in the shop have all the fluids changed and that it was stored with NO gas in it. After that he will send it to a detail shop to give it the once over and it should be ready to go. He said it doesn’t appear like it was ever dropped as there are no scratches on and of the metal or foot pegs. Pretty much original that I can tell except for maybe the exhaust cans but I’m not sure what they originally looked like.
Anyway I’m going to see where this goes as he said he had some interest from people already so hope that I’ll be able to gain some wisdom here….

Re: Hello From Wisconsin
Bike looks pretty complete. Hard to say from the pictures. Very, very dusty but may clean up very nicely. Exhaust is NOT original

Welcome to the site, Bruce.
Hard to believe these things are still being found in barns/sheds.

Welcome! I'd personally want the bike before anyone else touched it. Taking it 'to the shop' is usually bad news for these old bikes. I'd make him an offer 'as-is' and go from there. The bike is going to need a lot of TLC from a passionate owner, not a hired gun. The carbs WILL have to come off for sure, as well as a whole list of other things I've mentioned before. You, as the new owner, should be doing all this. Good luck and keep us posted.

Here is the link to the bike: https://milwaukee.craigslist.org/mcy/d/ ... 71326.html
So all the work, tune-up, carbs, tires etc was done 14 years ago, then it was stored? It will have to be done all over again, for sure. Even hosed off, it's maybe a $6-7K bike. Now if miraculously after 'going to the shop', it looks and runs perfectly, then maybe close to his asking price. Again, I wouldn't want anyone else touching it, but that's way too much money as-is.

Re: Hello From Wisconsin
Thanks for the help... Probably too late at this point because when I talked to him it was already in the shop
How difficult is it to find parts for these? That's a big concern of mine if I get it and keep it long term.
Guess I'll just cross my fingers and see how it turns out...

Almost any part can be found for the CBX.
Just depends how deep are your pockets.

If you can get me a date with Jackie Burkhart, I'll give you a deep discount on any CBX parts you need.

Re: Hello From Wisconsin
So looking at the photos again I'm trying to figure out what's going on with the fuel line...
I'm thinking maybe a rusty tank or something? Looks like a valve and inline filter was installed correct?

Probably means the one attached to the tank is frozen.

Re: Hello From Wisconsin
I love the "newer tires will be fitted" comment - does that mean that second hand tires that aren't quite as knackered as the 14 year old ones will be fitted?! Hell, I guess they may even splash out on NEW ones?!

Also love the comment 'and I don't need help selling the bike'. At that price he does.
