Acquired a CBX the hard way. Hello from SLC...

Post by SS350Sport »

Hello, I've been lurking since 6/17 and figure it's time I introduce this crazy story. I've wanted a CBX since I was @ 16, I'm 54 now. I came across this CBX by shear fate. I moved to SLC in 89 from a small rural town where I grew up riding all sorts of MC's. Everything from tote goats, dirt bikes to my dad's Harleys. When I moved to SLC I swore off riding, as traffic and people were both crazy. Three years ago my son calls from work and said an old co worker was selling a 78 CB750 were they worth having? I remember my uncle and all his friends ripping around on these in the 70's-80's and remembered how cool they were. He wanted a first street bike and I figured it would be a good one. We picked it up, got it running and when I took it for a test ride it was over. All of the memories from riding all came rushing back and now I had to have one. I picked up a low mileage 77 CB750 and got it running. The boy and me rode our ass's off for the summer of 2016 and really enjoyed the bikes and all that comes with riding a vintage bike. Fast forward to May of 2017 and I'm riding home from work 5/11/2017 3:40 PM (I'll never forget it) the dreaded" left turn" in front of me. I was going about 35+ and just approached the cross walk when she turned left. I hit the B pillar straight on and ejected off the bike. As I was launching off the bike the top of my feet caught the handle bars and sent me flipping over the car. I remember feeling my arms and legs being flung out from my body and thinking this is going to hurt. I had a pair of Doc Martin low top shoes on, levis, short sleeve casual shirt, my gloves and of course my helmet. Now the miracle, I landed on my feet and fell to the ground tumbling a few times. I had injuries to my ankles, feet (sprains) and the worst, a burn to my inner right thigh, from the pressure of the impact and the high speed ejection off the seat. That burn took 7 months to heal and i"m sure my ankles and feet will be somewhat painful for the rest of forever. Here are a few pics of the CB crash.

If you look close at the seat and tank, off to the right side you can see the serrations of my levis melted into the vinyl on the seat and the clear coat of the tank. What a freak accident. I don't have video of the flip but I have two written whiteness statements given to the police. So on to the CBX acquisition. While looking for parts to rebuild the CB750 my son and I pulled up to a motorcycle scrap yard. As we pulled up I noticed a Kawi KZ900/1000 mid 70's. I told my son those were pretty desirable and fast as hell. I also stressed how weird it was to see one at the scrap yard and my son replies, next you you know you'll find a CBX here. So we get out, get into the yard and I see what looks like a CB900/1000 with a big ole Windjammer fairing on it, and the gas tank was sitting where the seat should be. I didn't pay much attention to it but the shape of the tank kept my attention. I stopped and backed up and counted the pipes... HOLY SHIT six pipes.... I freaked out. It was a 79 CBX missing the seat and all rear fender pieces. I looked it over for over an hour. I had only ever seen one before in person and that was the summer of 2016 while at a bike show. I told my son I didn't need another bike especially in the situation I was in, healing and rebuilding the CB750. Plus the wife would flip if I drug another bike home. Over the last two years we have accumulated 5 CB750's.

Here is a picture of the CBX through the fence as I am leaving the yard without the CBX. If you look in the lower part of this picture you can see the rear fender of the KAWI KZ. Turns out the same guy that abandoned the CBX also dropped off the KZ.

Leaving the bike ate at me for 5 days. I decided to grab some cash and head back down there, hoping that by now some one surely had bought it. As I pulled up there it was. I settled on a price and brought it home. the best i can tell the bike has not run since 1995. and has major sun damage to most plastic parts. I have since rebuilt the carbs and lots of other various other work. I have had the pleasure of working with Louis, Mike Nixon, Phil and a few others already. The support in the community is amazing. I'll save the rest for a project thread.

That's my buddy's chopper. It used to belong to Karl Malone (NBA). My buddy had to have it shortened and sectioned to fit him.

Welcome to CBX ownership! Use the resources you already highlighted and you will not go far wrong. Most of the things that go wrong on a CBX have already gone wrong, and in this community is the experience to inform you about it before it happens! Switch your fuel off whenever the engine is not running, don't be afraid to ask any questions and use the manual for any work you do. Please consider taking pictures along your project, and write an article :techie-typing: for the CBXPress so we can all enjoy the process! :text-thankyouyellow:

The fairing was in the trash within 30 minutes of the bike being at the house. I think the fairing masked the true identity of the bike at the scrap yard. It sat there for 8 days before I snatched it. This also necessitated getting a new wiring harness from Phil as the PO had hacked the orig harness for the Windjammer. That and the sun rot on all the connectors.

You also need to remove the two spool spacers from the oil cooler and turn it right-side-up. That was a mod that came with the fairing. But no one ever removes the spools - I have a whole collection of them. You will need the correct shorter bolts to re-mount the cooler.
