Dry carb piston and barrel with some corrosion.

Post by sixinoz »

I took the cap off one of my carbs and the piston shows some signs of mild corrosion. Can this be removed with 2000 grit or polish etc or does this increase the piston gap and make it "misbehave".
I also noticed that the piston and barrel were very dry. I thought that crankcase fumes were drawn through the carbs to provide lubrication - can anyone shed any light on this?
Should I lubricate these manually?

2000 is a good grit to clean up the piston. Just don’t overdo it. Have you had all the carbs apart? They should all be checked for this. No lube here. Gasoline vapor will ‘lube’ them. Pistons will get very sticky from residue in the tower and receptacle. Clean them completely too.
