Cam Timing

Hi Guys, I have just put my CBX engine back together, but had a issue with the timing, I was a motor mechanic for 30 years so do know what I am doing. I followed the manual, set the crank to the T mark but found that I could not get both the punch marks to align exactly with the top of the head, I seemed to get on slightly above and one slightly below the head surface, if I moved the chain a tooth then then the one that was slightly above is now slightly below and visa versa, but if I align the F mark on the crank then the punch marks align perfectly. Am I doing something wrong? I do know about the right and left cams have to be opposite to each other, but that is not my problem.

Stevo - if you did not replace the cam chains, the old ones are stretched enough to see what you are seeing. You must decide which setting is closer, but keeping in mind the stretch, I would set the exhaust cam sprocket with the forward punch mark slightly above the head split, not slightly below.

Thanks Dave that is how I have set it, explains why the punch marks line up if I turn it around to the F mark, chain has stretched and cams are running slightly retarded, oh well probably lose a bit of low end torque with a gain of top end HP.
