Just got an 82!

Post by Wendell »

Hey everyone

I just got an ‘82 barn find with only 864 miles.

It has the original tires.

Started right up with a new battery plugs and a half teaspoon of oil in each spark plug hole

Question, does anyone know a great mechanic in Oregon? I want it looked at before I ride it.

Thanks!
Wendell

Congrats on the CBX ownership.
That must have a been a heck of a nice barn if it started up with that little prep.
Don't know anybody in Oregon but there is a place in the Dallas direction that a member used with good results.

:text-welcomewave: you've come to the right place for guidance on all things cbx, finding competent mechanics who understand the cbx is a significant challenge...
you live in Dallas and the bike is in Oregon? are you planning to ride it to Dallas?
it certainly needs a good inspection, I'd be very surprised the if the brakes don't need a good cleaning or rebuild...
CBX a work in progress, still improving...GS1150EFE completed and awaiting modifications.....RD350, remnants in boxes scattered throughout the garage

Relating to Wyly's comments - do you live near the bike now? Or do you have to do this long distance? There are lots of good CBX guys in CA if you can truck it there. What is your level of competence doing normal maintenance? It needs a bit more than 'looked at'. The brake systems will need completely disassembled and cleaned. Forks will need rebuilt with new seals and oil. New tires, certainly. Try to fine the OEM sizes, especially the rear 130/90-18. The tank should be completely drained into a white plastic bucket to see what's in there. Any rust or contamination at all needs completely cleaned. Only use an AGM battery - no lead-acid batteries. Highly unlikely that the carbs won't need a rebuild. All this is in addition to the normal tune-up stuff - valve adjustment, timing check, cam chain adjustment, new plugs. Check the air filter for mice nests. Time alone can be hard on these bikes.

Sounds like you found a nice one. Proceed carefully and with a mission to do this all the right way and you will be rewarded.

Thanks for the good feedback. I am in Dallas and the bike is in Oregon where I got it. I think the idea to get it to CA is a good one. Who should I connect with there to see about things?
