Upgraded alt. charging question
Greetings,
I am having charging issues with the upgraded alt. mod I did a while back. Just recently, I noticed that it will not provide adequate charging at idle ( 6-8v, ) yet at 2500 rpm and up, it charges at 12v. At normal cruise, I would see 12-13 v. I checked with a multi meter and found that I am off about one volt vs. the meter on the bike. Anyone else with this mod run in to this? Can this unit be repaired or am I now looking to replace this unit?
Thanks.

Re: Upgraded alt. charging question
It is the the kawi zx7r alt. mod. I installed it a few years back and purchased it from a gentleman that that had it listed on this forum. It is the same one now listed on Tims CBX.
Thanks

Yes, welcome. Where in Colorado do you live? There are several members out there. I can think of three, in Aurora, Westminster, and Grand Junction.

Re: Upgraded alt. charging question
Fred -- I assume your multi-meter check was across the battery terminals. That should read 14 to 14.3 at about 2500rpm. Another check is all connections between alt and battery. One ohm of resistance, either at one connection or total, can lead to loss of 1 volt easily. Things you have likely thought/done. But, always worth the mention.

Re: Upgraded alt. charging question
Home is Montrose CO closest to Grand Junction. I did the meter check and found about 12-13v at an estimated 2500 rpm because my tach cable broke the same time my alt went south. I believe these are Nippon Denso products that might be able to be fixed. I droped it off at a local alt. shop ( familiar with motorcycles him self)along with the battery for a load check. Waiting to here back. Would an off the shelf zx7r alt bolt right on?
Thanks.
Is there a list of owners available?

We used to have a member who was a pilot, flew out of the Montrose airport on US 50 north of town.

Re: Upgraded alt. charging question
Fred have a read through this thread about upgraded alternators.
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=8141
J.R. is no longer offering his upgrade but there should be some info that you can use.
I would also contact Tims and see if they have any ideas.

Re: Upgraded alt. charging question
Those ZX alternators have an internal regulator that seems not to be replaceable - not sure about that though. Yes, another should bolt right on to your adaptor. 13 volts max is too low and will run your battery dead. I assume the unit charged better in the past?

Re: Upgraded alt. charging question
Got word from my alt. guy that the diodes are ok, brushes are like new and the batt. is charged and was load tested to be ok. After I recheck the connections and reinstall to get the bike started for winterization, any suggestions on what my next purchase step might be? Tims has one but pretty expensive espically since I already have the adapters. Possible suggestions for an out fit to re build with a new reg. or rectifier?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Upgraded alt. charging question
You should be able to pick up another alternator just like what you have either on eBay or from a M/C wrecking yard for about $50-$75.00
Just utilize the adapter etc.

Re: Upgraded alt. charging question
Not quite sure what you are asking, Fred.
Everything on the alternator checks out and now you are aiming at a reg/rec?
If you are still looking for an alternator for your adapter some models can be found here.

Like Phil says, usually $75 range on Ebay.

Re: Upgraded alt. charging question
I should have been more descriptive: he was unable to do a spin up on the alt. to see if it was the reg/rec. Only did a static check (brushes, diodes). Not sure if there is any one out there where it could be sent for a full check. Ebay sounds like the best option.
Thanks so much for that link steve.

Re: Upgraded alt. charging question
Any one know where I might find a voltage reg./part number for this unit? I would like to try this before I look for another alternator. Have not heard back from CBX-tras or Ricks electric yet.
Thanks
