Hi everybody
So i have my x together finally and she is going well(running in rings atm).
I hear a strange bearing/whirring noise under load , possibly a bit like the cards through spokes that described the alternator problem.
I am also hearing a chirping that was also described on various posts re the alternator.
Noticible on LHS
If i pull the clutch in and rev, let it die down to 1000rpm and release the noise is gone.
Go through a few more rev changes and it re-appears (around 2.5k-3k)
Rinse repeat.
When the engine is cold-NO NOISE
As soon as the oil is warm it re-appears.
WHAT I HAVE DONE:
After reading the posts (thanks everyone) I have shimmed the spring by 3 mm (was on 29mm spring length)
I have replaced BOTH bearings in caseing and under rotor
I did not sand the plates as the scoring didn't seem to bad.
The noise appears less althoug it is still coming and going.
Kinda at a loss as to what else i can do (BTW the bearing i removed looked to be in good nick)
The the Symptoms sound like alternator esp under load
Any suggestions at this stage i will look inot
Thanks
Thor

An excellent article from Mike Nixon on alternator upkeep.
Info on sanding plates as well.
Thor, it sounds like you will need some emery paper.

One other thing, If I remember correctly. Honda manual states to coat the contact surfaces of these two clutch plates with MOLY GREASE when reassembling. Do so.

Re: Stumped on wierd noise, alternator od something else
Thanks guys
I can sand em, (i had seen the article ) but there were some differing accounts regarding the viability of doing it
Some said yes and some no
I didn't go with grease (saw that as well) as people were saying it was oiled
So it does sound like a alt plate problem (appearing only under load)?

Re: Stumped on wierd noise, alternator od something else
Is the tiny aluminum button still in place in the end of your primary shaft - the splined end that the drive plate slips over? It has a small orifice that meters oil onto the alternator plates. Be sure it's there and not plugged. Does it appear that the alternator plates are getting oiled? The assembly grease would quickly disappear once the engine got hot and the hot oil circulated to the clutch plates.
Not too sure if your spring is still a spring and that it is shimmed enough. 29mm is pretty sagged.

Re: Stumped on wierd noise, alternator od something else
Hi Dave,
Aluminium button is there and it looked to be dispensing oil.
(recessed into shaft about 2mm?)
The spring has been shimmed underneath the thrust washer (i would say about 3mm) bringing it up to 31mm...
HANG ON!
Just realised as typing...
I had a thrust washer made up... (.5mm thicker than the original)
Plus an additional washer undernear of about 2mm which only takes us to 30.5mm total with the spring
I rekon put another washer under there?
When assembling i can fit the plate on the spline about 6mm (before putting the other plate ass on)
Is this about right?
Thanks

Re: Stumped on wierd noise, alternator od something else
A new spring measures 31mm. There were many that shimmed even those. I'd add at least another 1mm. All else sounds OK.
