New guy from San Francisco peninsula

Post by Rolls »

Hello, everyone. Been enjoying the forum as a lurker on and off for a few years, and an admirer of the CBX since I first saw a new one at a dealer in Dallas. A couple years later when it was time to plunk my money down on a new bike, I chose the much more practical '83 Nighthawk 650. It was a light (434 lb), compact, quick and low maintenance bike, which I dearly loved.

After many years off of riding for the usual wife/kids/work reasons, I got back on to a CB1100 in 2013 and have enjoyed 37,000 miles of riding throughout Northern California, but mostly in the lovely Santa Cruz mountains, with a few trips to nearby tracks Thunderhill & Laguna Seca. Love that bike more with every set of tires I go through.

But, I never forgot that CBX and I've spent way too much time on YouTube listening to the beautiful wail of the CBX, so I decided I'd like to enjoy one of my own while I still can and while I'm living in a great area for riding. Plus I keep seeing CBXs out and about while I'm riding, like these guys:

I've been watching the market on and off for a year now, but I hadn't bid on anything until recently. Anyway, while playing around on ebay, I punched a few buttons and somehow won an auction for a '79 Candy Glory Red (same color as my 2013 CB1100) with 16,000 miles in Michigan from a knowledgeable and experienced owner of several CBXs over the past 38 years.

Together we're waiting on HaulBikes to pick it up and transport it here to the SF Bay Area. It's no collector and it sat for some time as many do, in this case because the previous owner passed away. It's mostly stock and running fine now, and sitting on tires with good tread, but far too old to be safe.

It is sporting 6-6 Dencos, which I suspect will be too loud, but are in excellent shape.

Terrifying to buy something like this long distance, but I should be able to see it in person in the next few weeks. Hopefully the bike will arrive safely and the registration process in California will go smoothly. Wish me luck!

Something wicked this way comes...

Welcome to the site, Rolls.
An excellent introductory post.
You are right about long distance purchases. After a couple stinkers i started long distance driving.
Dencos too loud? Nope! Here is an old clip from George with a set. https://www.flickr.com/photos/13481782@N06/2800730231/

Welcome to the "family". You do indeed live in an area of great riding. We were lucky to spend a few days in the Santa Cruz hills at the end of the C2C (Coast to Coast) ride in 2005.

Either garage is too small or we have too many bikes. Or Momma's car needs to go outside.

if that bottom pic is of your new Dencos you may want to put a split pin in that axle nut before you go for a ride... :D
CBX a work in progress, still improving...GS1150EFE completed and awaiting modifications.....RD350, remnants in boxes scattered throughout the garage

Good catch, wryly. Bike is set to be picked up in Michigan tomorrow, and arrive here in SF Bay Area around June 11. I'll need to give it real good looking over when it arrives.

Great looking part of the world you're in. Hope you get to keep those Dencos, they do sound sweet.
