Welcome, sounds like the rest of us here that have completely Rebuilt the carbs, Most likely your carb balance was hard because your idle circuit and jets are clogged, My spark looked weak also when i tested with a spark plug out, But fired right up and runs strong, also recheck your cam and chain position if you pulled the head . Have checked came timing and is correct have the carbs off at the moment all jets look fine.its strange when you hit the start button for the first time after a few hours it sounds like it wants to start but only for a split second then just turns over with no results will fit a new battery this week see if that makes a differance.thanks for your input.

Hi,
Welcome to the site!
Have you removed the pilot jets from the carb bodies to clean them? They are pressed in - but still need to be removed to make sure the passage ways are clear.
Paul.

Hi,
I assumed you had a Z / '79 model - later carbs are different.
On a Z: the pilot jet is below the centre tower which has a rubber bung in it.
Paul.

Hi,
I take the pilot jets out using #2-56 machine screw. They screw direct into the jet without having to drill / tap the jet itself. Then use the machine screw as a puller as in the picture: Paul.

Vincent: There are volumes written here about carb cleaning. Become familiar with the search function/options and you'll have several evenings' reading. We'll certainly help further as well, but yours is an oft-asked question with lots of answers here.
